Hello everyone and thanks for the forum! I'm 50 and new to the hobby and want to take out my 11 year old son to beachcomb when I'm able. We went out the other day and didn't have much luck as we are just learning how to locate and pinpoint targets. I have a Whites Spectrum XLT that I have had for years but never got to use due to continued health issues so I now want my son and myself to enjoy some time hunting the beach and areas as I am able.
On our hunt, our biggest issue was locating the target as it "seemed to move" constantly. Of course I know it is us. Searched on coin and jewelry and beach and jewelry and had the best luck with beach mode as it didn't pick up the dark sands. Still had a terrible time locating the target, target death and getting to a target on low tide before it filled back in. I know as we get better pinpointing the exact target depth and location, the rest will come as well.
We did not have a pin pointer but my wife bought us one after the outing from the online place and was reviewed well and was waterproof for $39.00 or close to that as I can't afford a Garmin or like quality and was so disappointed when it arrived yesterday. It's built sturdy but almost had to be touching the object before going off. maybe a 1\2" in the open if that far. Really bummed bout that one so may have to send it back and keep looking for a used one somewhere. Continued medical expenses prevent going much more expensive at this time. If I am missing a good, less expensive pin pointer somewhere, please direct me to it.
Hope that tells you how green my son and I are at this great hobby but we both look forward to enjoying some father and son time finding all kinds of treasure and trash :)
Take care and thanks again!

Welcome to TreasureNet from SoCal. Don’t be disappointed if the pin pointer only goes off at 1/2”. That’s fine because if the signal was at a greater distance it would take longer to zero in on it.
Place a few coins on the ground where there is no other buried metal and practice pin pointing the targets. First left to right then up and down. Try to see where you get the clearest target tone as you criss cross the coin.
Good luck!

Welcome aboard from very northern CA. I do a lot of beach combing too but not usually with my XLT. So few tourists here to loose gold and silver. Although I know 4.5 miles from my beach there are over $50,000,000 in gold coins. (shipwreck of the Brother Jonathan)

What area are you from?

Welcome aboard from Northern Virginia :skullflag:
