Hi,
My name is Jerad and i just got my first metal detector and its a ace 350. I have been reading some posts and stuff from here and other sites, but this one seems like it is the best. I'm from Indiana and its about 20 degrees right now so its kind of hard to get out. I hope to get out in the next week, but some tips on anything would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Jerad, welcome to the hobby and this site! You picked the right place. What kind of things do you hope to look for and what kind of places will you hunt?

Welcome to the forums. This is one of the best forums on the net for treasure hunters.
As for tips I have a few:
1. Read as much as you can, watch videos on youtube and learn from the experts.
2. Learn your machine well, don't think you have learnt it because you know how it works, that is just the basic start, you will have to learn the sounds, learn what your machine is telling you. This takes time and it's not one week or two.
3. If you don't know something just ask, there are tons of people that will help you out.
4. Take your time, at the beguining you will find tons of trash and few goodies, that is just normal, you HAVE to dig up the trash at first to learn your machine. DON'T trust your display at first, trust your ears, and dig up every single thing, that is just a MUST every time you get a new detector so you understand it's language.

other than that....good luck and welcome...

Welcome - I think you will love this site!

Hey There Jerad,
Welcome to the hobby, Ive hunted with the ace 350 for a year now and love the DD coil in trashy areas.
I started just hunting in coin mode and mostly dug clad. Than i hunted in jewelry mode and became aware of all the cool stuff like Gold i was passin over.
Now i will only hunt in all metal mode, It took me a while to handle all the information you get with iron sounds too,But you will learn to hear the difference
between a dime or quarter and a bottle cap. Your ear is the best for good targets.
You'll find Gold jewelry any where between Foil and a penny signal. Good hunting! DSCN2247.webp

Hey jerad welcome to the addiction from a fellow Hoosier the ace 350 is a great machine easy to use I think once you get out and use it you will fall in love good luck

I'm going to start with old home sites and I would like to find old coins and historic items.

Congrats on the MD Jerad and welcome aboard!

My 2 cents...

Dig every consistent/repeatable target until you really start to notice some of the subtle differences your machine makes when it talks to you. Sweep a found target from several directions and notice any differences.

Be methodical in your search, including re-sweeping an area from a different direction.

Double check EVERY hole/plug before filling in and restore EVERY hole to as close to original condition as possible. I already lost access to one spot 1/3 mile in the woods, because some lazy, selfish jerk couldn't be bothered taking a few seconds to fill in the mine field he left behind.

Sonofadigger, which part of Indiana you from and thanks to everyone for the advice and encouragement.
