I got my Garrettt AT Pro in the mail about 2 weeks ago, quickly realized I needed a pinpointer, got one of those, made a DIY sand scoop and started hitting local(ish) beaches and a few smaller, local spots. I've found lots of trash, lots of coins (all clad I think, with 2 wheats) and a few things that are unknown and possibly interesting. Without further ado....

The entire haul, minus some stuff that went straight to the trash can.

These are the two most interesting finds. This button was pretty deep, probably 10-12" down on a saltwater beach. It has latin (I think) writing on it and it could very well be modern. The other item looks like it could be a brass or copper handle from a sea trunk or something (?). I don't even know where to begin to try to ID something like this or to determine age. The screw looks like it has threads (see photo of back of "handle" and button)

This is another picture of the button with something else I'm not sure what it is. I don't think it's much of anything but it looked cool when it came out of the sand.

These are unknown items. The round item on the right is heavy and I believe it is brass. I'm hoping it's some sort of valve and not some sort of munition.

Here is another look at those last two unknowns...

I have a few questions....

1. How do I clean these coins? Some are too dirty to read. I read somewhere to resist he urge to scrape the sand off he crusty coins and clean them with soap and water at home. I've done this, but some of the coins are still very crusty. Electrolysis? Lemon juice?

2. What do you do with the "trash"? Just pitch it all? I scrap a tiny bit and will definitely toss any brass, copper or lead I find into those various buckets. What about he aluminum foil/tabs/foil bottle caps, etc? Bottle caps? rusty bolts, etc? Recycle it?

I work tomorrow but have plans for my next two days off for MDing. It's a lot of fun.

TIA

Welcome to the forum SweetCorn. You're doing very well on your first 20 hours!

I'm not sure what exactly the button is, but it's a cool find. There are many knowledgeable members that are happy to help with identification and information.

It's a good idea to hold onto anything that you're not positive is trash for a while. I've heard of people throwing out awesome finds (civil war eagle breast plate!) because they thought it was junk.

Thanks for posting and good luck!

The big item with the button (20th C blazer button in military style) is the back plate to a furniture handle.

Welcome to the forum and hobby! Looks like you had a fun 20 hours, keep up the good work!

Welcome to the forum. It looks like you are off to a good start.

Great finds! Looks like CRUSADER nailed some of your finds. I normally put my "trash" into a paint bucket and revisit it a few times before pitching. You will be surprised how "revisiting" your "trash" turns up some pretty good finds...

Welcome to TNet and congrats on all your finds. A big thanks too for picking up all the trash you find and properly remove. That will pay a bonus later in the form of karma!

I will totally agree. When first starting land detecting I tossed out a friction primer for a canon. When first water detetecting I tossed at least one I think more conical points from the copper culture people. Only from 4000 - 2000 years BC!! OOPS

Nice bunch of stuff there. Soon to hit gold I am sure

Welcome to Tnet.
You're off to a great start. Dig everything, which I see you are doing. That will really help you to understand your machine.
Many of us clean our "Clad" coins using a rock tumbler. You can get one from any one of our sponsors. A little aquarium gravel, dish detergent, water, and a few hours of tumbling, and your coins will be ready for deposit.
There is a tremendous amount of knowledge on Tnet.
Don't be afraid to ask.

Good haul there, as to one of your questions I save the aluminum pulltabs to give to a local childrens hospital that has a program that gets $ off procedures for the kids.I also pick up clear and white water bottle caps for veterans to get $ off treatments.I don't know if you have any organizations in your area that do that but you could look into it.As for the bottle caps I haven't found any use for them so I trash them.Check with your local legion hall or veterans group see if they have any programs you could donate some of your finds to.You might put your WHATZIT's in the What is it forum with pics from all sides might get an I.D. on them. Keep up the good work GOLD is in your future hitting all the signals you are hitting.100_6098.JPG100_6099.JPGThis is how much I have now for donation.

Nice! Welcome to TreasureNet! I've only found clad and 2 wheaties as well, so you are not alone in that regard!

I have a five-gallon bucket of whatz-its. Every now and then I go back though it after seeing miraculous ID's here on the forum. Stay with it, bear down on the sounds in your headphones and get good at knowing what you are about to dig and how deep it is. :occasion14:

Thanks everyone for the kind words and encouragement.
More updates to come.
