Yes, the New Madrid quakes occurred in Dec. 1811 and January 1812
and were the largest quakes in the Eastern US since Europeans arrived.
The quakes were estimated to be between 7.2 and 8.1, with some
observers reporting the Mississippi River flowed backwards for a while.

A swarm of small quakes in the area could be a foreboding
of something developing there.
With large quake hitting around the world, this could impact
the area.

There were two large quakes today, a 7.1 in Japan and a 6.5 in Mexico.

When large quakes occur they can affect other areas.
Seismologist like to use the dropped soda bottle analogy.
Once you shake up the system, the pressure increases and
can spread to other areas.
