WHITE'S MXT (and man is she hot!)
Alright White's owners! It's time to kill my Bounty Hunter 505. I want a white's!
http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,152081.new.html
(if you read the link you will know why). Which would you recomend, a new M6 or a used DFX. They are both at the top of my current budget, and I REALLY like the M6, but I would preffer the DFX's options. Either way, I want VDI numbers. I don't know much about the others in between (like the MXT, XLT, etc.) tell me what you think!
Thanks for advice ahead of time!

Re: New M6 or used DFX? Time to upgrade!

Fill us in:
what kind of hunting?
Where?

For coins, relics I have heard the DFX is good as it is very programmable though the preset programs are kinda 'weak' as they are for 'beginners' and not to harsh for some one new.
Because of that it is programmable there comes a learning curve to it and it also is pretty flexible.
As for coins look up DFX-SE Gregg (or something like that he's called) he did very good last year (2007) with 10 000 coins or so. :)
Look into the Explorer Se to it might be interesting for ya to.

I have not researched the M6 so much so someone might fill ya in better on that one.

Cheers,
Eu

Thanks for your post! I guess I did forget to mention what I am trying to do. I want to coin shoot in the mid west, do some relic hunting on occasion, and be able to use it at the beach (fresh and salt) on few occasions (not very often, but I want to have the option should the opportunity arise). I am a beginner, but I have already outgrown my BH. I know that there is a bit more I could learn, but I am not impressed with what I already know. That, and the hand grip is already coming apart and the retaining nut for the adjustable pole has already broken (despite being cared for carefully). Thanks for you post and I will look him up!

Re: New M6 or used DFX? Time to upgrade!

Hey asleysflyr

I have a dfx and my brother has the m6.

The dfx has all the options on it to set it up for the kind of hunting you want to do but you are going to need patience. Factory presets are kinda weak and if you tweak the programs alittle you definitly get better results. The stock coil [ 950 ] is pretty decent for most hunting but you will probably want another coil like the 4x6 or 6x10 for trashy areas. I have the 4x6 and love it.

As far as depth for me the norm is 6" and thats pushing it. The other thing about the dfx is you have to scroll thru the progams to set it while on the m6 and mxt all you have to do is turn knobs, which is nice.

My brother has the m6 for that reason alone because he didn't want to have be a computer programmer to go detecting and he likes the m6.

As far as use detectors goes, look for one that has some warranty left on it because it is transferrable to the new owner from Whites.

I would also recommend Jeff Foster's book-Digging deeper with the DFX- if you plan on getting it. Just prepare to do some reading to get the most out of the machine. I've had mine now for 14 months and still learning the beast.

HH and good luck

Re: New M6 or used DFX? Time to upgrade!

Thanks a lot bubby. Sounds like the M6 is the ticket for me. I have plenty of patience, but I like the knobs, I have gotten used to it after using the BH. It finally shot craps on me about 30 minutes ago, so I cleaned it up and I am taking it back in just a bit. Wish me luck!!!

Re: New M6 or used DFX? Time to upgrade!

If your mainly coins shooting don't forget the MXT!

Even if the M6 is faster and easier for a newbie to set up.
You'll be quite a bit more flexible with the DFX as I said before but it will take time and a challenge.
I am waiting for a delivery of a DFX myself. ;D

As for being a computer programmer you can make it as easy or hard as you want depending on what/when and why you begin tweaking all the settings. You can get better performance on the presets by only tweaking 2 or 3 things! (sometimes even less)

It really depends on you. Good luck.(you asked for it  )
And yes the digging deeper with the DFX book is supposed to be super.

Re: New M6 or used DFX? Time to upgrade!

I will have to look into the MXT, any MXT owners care to speak up?

~Tom

I found the MXT from a local dealer only charging 720, and the M6 for 630, cheapest so far! I figure I would have spent about 850 after taxes and shipping if I bought online, I will have to call Kellyco and see what deals they have.

I have owned the DFX and Gave it up for the MXT and I love the MXT! the DFX has a learning curb. and is mainly for Coin Relic and has more of a saltwater capability. The MXT on the other Hand is Geared for Gold, Relic and Coins! it can be used on the beach but the DFX is more adaptable. You can use the presets on the DFX but as one reply to a post said Do You Want to Spend a Lot of Time Learning the DFX when you can have more Fun with the MXT from the Start. the choice is yours I do Not Regret giving up the DFX and truly enjoy my MXT!-Gary.
P.S. Check this link out on the Question I raised maybe will help you and also Check the forums out for past references out on this same subject also check out a few posts below yours on the hunter who has the m-6 again not trying to influence you think carefully and truthfully on what you will be hunting the most for! I had bought the DFX because it was top of the line but sometimes this is not the right thing to do! Gear the Detector to YOUR needs!
http://forum.treasurenet.com/whites/index.php/topic,14524.msg151226.html#msg151226

and continue to seek advice! I think I did with my MXT and now don't regret it one Bit again thanks_Gary.

Ash, I could have gotten a DFX but picked the MXT. I have no regrets. It was the right choice for me. My main hunting is for coin...but I also intend to relic hunt and nugget hunt. The MXT can do all of these things. Also plan to take it to the beach on occasion. I bought the 4x6 DD coil for the trashy areas I hunt. The difference is like night and day. The stock coil is ok for light trashy areas and open areas. With the MXT you have the option to buy more coils. Took me time to get use to the noise it makes. That is still the one thing I don't like about it.

I'm not trying to influence you just sharing with you. Good luck with your decision.....Pepper

P.S. $720 is a good deal. And having a good, local, dealer is priceless!

Pepper mentioned something which should really be considered: Coil selection.
The more you can chose a coil fitting your conditions the better.

Eu

Sounds like you need a M-6 or MXT.. The M-6, MXT and DFX use the same coils.. I use a M-6 And it is a great machine.. If the MXT had the 7 tones I would have bought one... Love the M-6 so much I have two..
I have had 7 detectors, from different manufacturers in the last year from mid to top of the line and the M-6 is the best all around I have played with..

I really like my MXT. I have 2 extra coils for different situations. It's all the machine I need. The MXT is mostly considered a turn-and-go machine but you still have to interpet what its telling you.

Good Luck finding a used M6 or MXT. On Ebay they bring a few dollars less than new. Most dealers should be able to sell you a M6 for like $595, I checked a few before I found a used one (whew!!!). I have been searching for about 2-3 months before I got lucky. Keep diggin'

Greg

That's a great price for the MXT and you are buying locally.
Pick up the 4x6DD shooter to go with it.

Now go and find the stuff you have been missing

I have the M6 and I must say that I love it very much. I'm still learning it but in my opinion its the best deal for the money.

How well does the 4X6 DD coil pinpoint, especially on the M6?

I bought my M6 used for $350 on Treasure Depot and it still had 10 months warranty left.Since then ,Feb. 07,I have found around 80 silver coins with it.Good luck!
