I dug this button today at the same site I found the 1889 Indian head penny. The button was about 6 or 8 inches deep and it sounded like a weak wheat tone on my DFX. Thinking it was trash I dug it anyway just to prove myself wrong once again.
On the back it reads HORSTMANN PHILADELPHIA I googled it and it turns out this button was produced from 1893 to 1935. Now I just need to find out what type of uniform it came off of and why was it in a 100 year old school yard.

Any info would help

Thanks for looking

It's a U.S. Army "Great Seal" general service uniform button, a pattern introduced in 1902 and still in use today.
