New Jersey Copper Toasted & Heart Breaker 2 Reale Totally Worn
Well it looks like I finally found a new spot. Here's the story: Went to an estate sale here on Long Island with my son on Saturday. The sale was off a very old road, and as I was talking to my son I missed the turn. As I continued to drive looking for a place to turn around, I spotted an enticing section of county parkland woods with huge old pine trees in front lining the road. I said to my son (not a metal detector) there's got to be some old stuff in there since many houses on the road were built in the mid 1800s. I also found out researching the history of the area on the net, that there was a store on the road in 1776, about a half mile from these woods.
Anyway, I got to the woods today about 2:30, and first found some 20th century junk, then I dug some deep iron to get an idea of the age, and saw that the iron was at least from the 19th century. After that I dug two small brass or copper, green with age, flat head tacks or nails, that were definitely from the 1800s. At this point I pretty optimistic about finding some old coins or relics, since somebody was on this land a long time ago.
A little while later, I get an iffy signal at only about 4 inches, and pull out the plug. Checking the hole with the coil, I see the target is near the top of the hole, and reading penny/dime on my MXT. Pulled out some more dirt, sifted it, found a Copper and took a picture of it lying in the dirt. It's a New Jersey Copper; though you can only make out the shield on it. Kind of strange reading, since I'm almost sure the signal was penny/dime, and not quarter how large cents and coppers usually read on the VDI.
Continuing on I then found a really burnt Indian Head (not pictured) on a trail, and then turning around and heading back in the direction I came, I found a Dandy button, and then only six feet away, I get a strong penny/dime reading, at either 5 or 6 inches. Got the coin out of the hole, and took a picture. As I'm taking the picture, even with the encrusted dirt on it, I thought, man that looks like a quarter size piece of silver. Wiped the dirt off, and was at first really psyched that it was indeed a pretty big piece of silver, but then I was pretty bummed that, even though I had a found a 2 Reale, it was totally worn out. Can't complain, though, since it's the first 2 Reale I've found. I then found the ornate button right after the Reale in the same area, and then went blank for the last hour of hunting. By the way, this was the first time I ever brought my camera on a hunt. I just had a feeling I was going to find something decent.
