Hello out there,

Ok, during my first hunt of an historic site, I found what looks to be a coin of some sort. It was buried almost beneath a rotted tree. No date, light blue in color, and solid copper or gold. It looks like a medieval coin to me.

The site I hunted was an abandoned stone church circa early 1800s--but the area goes all the way back to the 1600s. As best as I can tell the church was both Polish and Orthodox Catholic.

Here are the pics (forgive the resolution). Any thoughts? As always, thanks a million guys.

Fantasy token :icon_scratch:

Its not medieval. It seems to have Greek letters on the outer edge & celtic knot in the centre ???

Thanks a million for your input.

Could you elaborate on "fantasy token"?

The coin does appear to be hand made--the edges are imperfect--and it perhaps is made out of copper, bronze, or gold? Thanks again.

It looks copper, just a token made up for fun or collecting rather than a trade token

Thanks.

I would be inclined to believe that--but it seems like most tokens here in the states have prayers or other writing on the back.

Also, to find it near the ruins of an 18 century stone church in the middle of the woods is a bit coincidental. I don't know. I might be holding on to hope. Could it be a cruel joke?

Again, thanks for you input. As soon as you said celtic knot I was able to identify that aspect. Excellent man. Much appreciated.

Might have been a joke or placed there as an offering maybe. You said it was a Polish Church, so it could be a foriegn token of some sort.

Agreed. I would just love to shed some light on what this is, exactly.

Interesting find!

The center looks like some sort of labyrinth. Labyrinths were used in medieval churches as symbols of the journey to God (walking the labyrinth).

The Labyrinth appears to be more Celtic. Still leaning to fantasy, but that one could do with some more research. Cool find, eiter way.

Thanks ppl!

I am going to consult with local professors here. I will let you know what I find. In the meantime, if any new viewers would like to share their thoughts, have at it!

Keep digging!

I've been messing around with the inscription, trying to make some sense of it. While some of the symbols seem clearly Greek, there are others that I've never seen in any Greek translation program. Also, in the 3rd picture on the upper right quadrant, there are 4 characters that look like the numbers 0139 in Arabic rather than Greek. The letters PYIUE? appear in one area, but the U should be upside down compared to the rest of the characters(actually the Omega symbol). I wouldn't go so far as to say modern fantasy piece, but I'd certainly say whoever made it was using characters that he didn't know the meaning of (of course the Celts were pretty famous for just that). As for the symbol of the other side, it kinda puts me in mind of the squiggly thing on coins from Turkey more than anything else. Good luck with the search and I hope it turns out to be old, or the symbol for a fraternal society rather than a modern fake.

There are a few celtic symbols in the borders as well as a traditional celtic knot in the center. I'd probably go with druidic token.
