Welcome to the hobby and this forum. A good site to lean extra beach hunting from is www.thegoldenolde.com/

There are many entry level detectors, but you would do well to spend more for a real detector and not a toy. Even if you stick with the major manufactures you will do well and the detector will last many years. Learn all you can about the hobby and the various machines and you will enjoy it all the more.

Good Luck,

It all depends on the beach. You can hunt some beaches with most any detector but some beaches have too much mineralization and you won't be able to keep your machine ground balanced. Match your detector to the beach conditions. If there is lots of black sand, if the beaches are regularly replenished, or if you want to hunt in the water, you will be talking about a much more expensive machine. I have to use a Pulse Induction unit on the beaches and shallow salt water I hunt. I can use the DFX for the always dry sand and "regular" dirt.
