October 26th, last year, I had to say good-bye to the best cat
there ever was...Scruff. Didn't say anything here as, to be honest,
I was pretty broken up about it. Scruff and I were about as tight
as man and cat can be for over 16 years, and I still miss him.

Time moves on, and in early Sept. a stray was hanging around,
apparently living off the dog food I feed the 'coons. Very skittish,
he'd only show up after dark, and would run away as soon as
I stepped out on the porch.

Took a while, but I finally coaxed him up to me, scratched his head
and that was all it took...I had a new buddy. He was thin..very thin,
and that dog food was probably about all he was getting, and not
much of that because the 'coons don't leave so much as a scrap.

Long and lanky, I figure him for about a year old. He's no longer
hungry, and eats like three cats...but after a couple can's of wet
food a day, plus all the dry food he wants, he's put some weight
on, and like any young tomcat, he's full of piss and vinegar. 8-)

Named him ....Luci....short for Lucifer Morningstar (like the guy
in the TV series). He's as black as the darkest night except for
one white star on his chest and a bit of grey in his groin.

Although his personality is much different than Scruff, I did
tell him he had some big shoes to fill..

After the heart break my wife and I went through when our last dog and cat passed on the same day about twenty years ago we said there would be no more pets. That lasted about 15 years when we were given a Yorkie puppy. And, about two years ago a stray cat decided to adopt us.
I dread the day when we have to put them down but take solace in the fact that they are getting a good home and plenty of attention.
This is Charlie and Hotrod. Hotrod started out as a shop cat but eventually became more of a house cat, though he still spends most nights outside. Charlie has been a house dog since we got him. He and Hotrod get along well.

Sorry about Scruff. We have 3 cats & basically our neighbors cat lives here so 4. They all have very distinct personalities so your new Luci will be a totally different guy. So good you've adopted him and he has a great home now.

Your story sounds too much like mine. I had a wonderful cat named Shadow and she was aptly named as she followed me everywhere she could. She never stopped to amaze me and she was smart. I lost her to cancer in 2017 and with her leftover food I decided to feed some of the neighborhood strays. One of them I named and came running every time I called for her, but she was feral. After some time went by I didn't see her and that was later found to be because she gave birth. She eventually brought 2 of the survivors here to eat the leftover cat food. Believe me there was plenty of it as I spoiled Shadow. It was getting quite cold as by this time winter was setting in in a bad way. I set up an old enclosed end table with a heating pad in it as the temperatures were going near 0. I couldn't coax them into the house at all. Eventually the mother and one sibling did not show up any longer and I surmised the worst for them. I started buying food to feed the remaining kitten and f saw some raccoons found the little haven and food I gave him. This struggle went on all winter long. Eventually I lured him into the house by leaving the food about 10 feet into the house and the door wide open. He soon figured it out that it was safe and warm inside, but it took us a few years to get him to the vet for him to be neutered and that was a challenge with the spraying. Today he's as strong and fit as an ox, but a bit dumb. I suspect the below zero days of winter may have brain damaged him, but I had named both siblings as Tweedle De and Tweedle Dumb. De still lives comfortably with me and one would hardly know he was a feral except for being a bit PTSD.
