hey guys,

I am seriously considering getting into metal detecting... I want a good detector that can pick up coins no problem. Anyone have an idea on a brand and price?

I live in Canada and was wondering where I am legally allowed to search, and how do you go about determining if you are allowed to search a certain area?

thanks for any suggestions...

Hey BjC! Better be careful if you go for a Minelab detector. The BBS machines don't like newer Canadian coins and I didn't find them particularly sensitive to small, low conductors in my soil (Okanagan). In regards to "professional" detectors, B. Hunter, Garrett, Whites, Minelab, Fisher .. all make detectors that fall into that category. They also make bargain detectors. If you want to start with coin/ring hunting at a good price, the Garrett Ace 250 offers what is, most pobably, the best bang for your buck. ..Willy.

Just go till someone kicks you off. Then ask if you can find old pennies.

I've been detecting since the early 80's, but divorce, heavy overtime, and a multitude of other issues "retired" me. And then I retired.
First detector I purchased was the cheap ACE-250. Easy to use, cheap, but it kept me wondering about the new toys. Came back to the reality I wanted something solid and better. Got the CTX, great machine, but it did not calm my needs - but used it until the Equinox came out - so I grabbed an 800.

Went on a hunt with a buddy using a Tejon - he kicked the stuffing outta me. So, got myself a Tejon and loved it. The Minelabs have been taking a rest since then.

I caution you, if swinging becomes a passion - don't get caught up in the chase for the "ultimate" detector. That will cost you some bucks.

If I can suggest, watch Utube videos. Great research tool. Find out what type of hunting you would most like to do, figure your budget for a detector, and to surfing the Utube. They have videos on most every make and model and many videos show these detectors in use in the field. Best of luck to you in your search.
