Hi,

Haven't done metal detecting since I was a kid (with a cheapy). Best find then was an 1872 quarter.

Did some detecting at a site as part of my geoarchaeology training (with a good detector) last summer and found 1 bronze, 3 copper, and 1 silver Roman coins. Plus a lot of Roman iron trash.

So I caught the bug again and just bought a Garrett Treasure Hunter CX Plus (best I could afford with a general and 2 box rig). Did my back yard last week in Athens, GA (4 1970's pennies and 2 newer dimes). The condo was built in 1983 so that makes since. Yesterday I played around at friend's house which she thought was built in the 1950's. Found 2 modern pennies, one 1927 and other 1926. I think the house was probably built in the 30's based on that. Anyone have thoughts on how likely that might be? May go back and detect in all metal mode to clean out the trash and try to find silver!

Sometimes that is hard to judge. A brand new school was built up in Maine some years back, and topsoil was brought in to create the lawns. After a few years, some people decided to detect the school, hopeing to make a good haul of new stuff. To their surprise, they started digging up many barber coins, indians, mercs, etc.

The topsoil had been brought in from another location by the contractor. The same thing has happened in some newer housing developments. Info like this can really stir the imagination, cant it?

We went on a little trip one day to detect the old fairgrounds in Damriscotta, Maine. We found the location and were given permission, and then we were told that a contractor had come in and bought all the topsoil off the fairground property, using it to make lawns for new housing developments in the area. They stripped a foot of material right off the top. Guess where all those good old coins are! In the lawns of brand new houses.

Gives one something to think about!

Well, Congrats on your finds!.........HH

Who would you ask to get permission to detect on a school? The principal? The town Mayor? There are a few older ones within blocks of my Condo. Might be good practice.
