New CRH'er here

Hey all, new guy here. I've been developing a big interest in silver and ever since a whole back when I found out that pre-65 coins are 90% silver I have been keeping my eyes open since. I guess it doesn't help at all that I live in Los Angeles and have never come up on anything. Anyway, I'm currently in Vegas and while sitting at a blackjack table yesterday, I hit a bj on a $5 bet and received a half dollar when I got paid. I looked at the year and saw that it was a 69 and didn't see a copper rim so I hopped on my phone (between shuffles) and found out that it was. 40%er! A little while later I looked at the dealers tray and saw what appeared to be a 64 half just siting in the front of the stack. I politely asked if I could change one of my non silver halves for it to which she said sure. A closer look revealed that it was indeed a '64! I'm still really stoked to finally find one so unexpectedly.

Today I went to two different casinos and got myself $160 worth of halves but they all ended to be "skunks" lol. Needless to say I'm getting quite addicted now and during my drive back home tomorrow I am thinking about stopping by the BoA in Barstow to buy a box of halves and maybe some dimes if they have them. I read that he chances of finding something in smaller towns is much greater than say in Los Angeles. Do you guys think its worth a try or is CA all picked clean?

My second question is what is the best way to revert all my non silver halves back to paper currency? Can I really walk into a bank with a bag of halves and ask them to deposit it into my account? I once watched a video where someone was hunting and opened up the rolls in a way that he can put all the halves back into the paper wrapping...any tips on how to best go about this?

Thanks for the help!

Welcome to Tnet bpt. All the info you need is right here. Just have to do some reading. You can bring some banks bags of halves but you need to set it up before hand. To start, I would reroll the halves, but don't reuse the machine wrappers they came in. That is a huge no no and very annoying for banks and other hunters. If they come hand wrapped, those are ok to reuse. Good job scoring at the casino. HH

Just a little FYI here...in my experience, most banks do not keep boxes of halves in stock. Generally speaking, if you want a box(es) of halves, you will have to find a bank willing to order them for you.

As far as big towns vs. small towns, both have their advantages and disadvantages. To hit a good score is pretty much just luck. You have to be at the right place at the right time. That big score could just as easily show up in downtown LA...or Podunk, Arkansas.

Thanks for the replies guys. Yeah I spent some time reading this forum before I posted but judging by the looks of it there seems to be a lot of fellow newcomers too so maybe I gotta just look a little harder.

Anyway, I just got back to LA but not before swinging by Barstow and Victorville. I first went to the BoA in Barstow and asked the branch assistant whether they had a box of halves I could buy. She said that they didn't carry them and went behind the counters to look for some. She then told me they only had a couple dollars worth here and there. I thanked her and left.

I then stopped by a branch in Victorville since it was on the way home. I asked the some question and was told that they usually didn't carry boxes of them. She also asked me if I was looking for "those old ones?" and also mentioned some name/type that I forgot. I replied "yeah" and she was like "Oh yeah those usually go really fast"....not sure what she meant by that, as if they displayed silver halves for sale or something. I was then told that I was welcome to order a box but I just thanked her and said that I wasn't from the area and was just passing through.

I had planned to ask for boxes of dimes too but I totally forgot.

Ah well...looks like i'll have to try my luck in the Los Angeles area. Kind of a bummer cause I was also looking for casinos in Vegas that still had quarter slots. I was going to exchange for a couple hundred dollars of quarters and sit in front of a machine to hunt lol

So I called all the BoA branches in my area and none of them had halves. Interestingly, one of them said that a customer recently ordered $5000 worth and never picked it up so they shipped it back yesterday and will not be taking orders for them from now on.

The last branch I just called openly mentioned that they were happy to order some for me if i'd like. So I placed an order for two boxes which should be arriving this Friday.

Since I live in Los Angeles, i'm assuming that all the branches (at least in my area) order from the same place. I'm having a bad feeling that living in such a huge city means that the place branches order from will just be resending dumps back and forth.

Anyway....i'm gonna remain positive and hope I find something this Friday. Gonna be my first time doing this.

As already mentioned above it doesn't matter where you live they're all getting recycled- being in la maybe there aren't many people who hassle with crhing- you might hit a jackpot or you might get skunked-

No ones mentioned it that I've seen but the cage will sell rolls of halfs just not in bulk but if your already there... Just say you want them for tips. I've never turned that down. Dealer friends of mine put them in the back of the trays for me when I play. Usually gets them a nice tip

I hope you bought those "few here and there" halves? Banks rarely to never just have boxes of halves sitting around unless it was just dumped there. When going to any bank you buy any and all halves they have....in a bag, loose, rolled, in an envelope. I once had a teller say "I am sorry this is the only halve we have in the entire branch" (hands me a nice shiny 64) :). I have been handed bags of looses halves with silver inside, envelopes of halves with silver inside, and many a roll with Ag.

BUY EVERYTHING!!!

Thanks for the replies. I didn't end up buying the "$3 dollars or so" the BoA branch had when I drove through the small town of Victorville....but now I wish I did. Anyway, lesson learned.

Back when I was in Vegas, the first casino I went to openly sold me as many rolls of halves I wanted....I only bought $100. At the end casino I bought from, I asked for $60 for them and I then asked if these can be brought back to be changed back to bills. It was funny cause the cage teller then said "Yeah...but not if you're buying these just to look for stuff." I acted completely dumb and was like "stuff???" and she said "Yeah because people usually go through these to look for silver." I just played dumb and was like huh? uhh nope...

BTW, got a question. What's with these "Brink" halves people keep speaking about? Is Brink some company/distributor of halves that are known to have a better chance of containing silver than others?

Silver? Really? Why would they be looking for silver? Haha. So what did she say when you brought them back?

Haha, I never went back there actually...didn't have the time. I just hauled all $160 in halves back to LA....I might just spend it on gas or keep it until I go through the two boxes I ordered and dump them together.

It's funny how now that i'm getting into this I think back and realized that there have been lots of times where pre-65 quarters and even Franklin halves have passed my hands back over the years and I just didn't know to keep them.

Welcome to Tnet :hello::skullflag:

Thanks :hello:

Just thought i'd update this thread. I was at Walmart buying some groceries today and saw a BoA in the same shopping center. I went in asking if they had any halves and was asked how much I was looking for. I said that I would take a box if they had it, or any loose rolls you might have. The teller went to the back and said they had one box available and was told that it was sealed. They said that they normally don't carry them and it was probably a special order that was never picked up.

I picked it up and took it home all excited. Just got done going through them and found nothing :sad10:

I know they can't all be winners but it's a pretty discouraging start.....I found a 2009 and a random one with a hole drilled through it. I also noticed that lots of coins had random sharpie swipes through them perhaps meaning it was marked by a previous CRH'er. I know you all say that big city vs. small city makes no difference but I gotta think I aint the only one around here doing this...

I'm really wondering if BoA or their supplier uses one of those coin counters with so called "silver checkers." Another thing I realized is how exhausting it is go through so many rolls. It would be easier if I just ripped them open but I was uncrimping one end of the wrappers so that I can refill them afterwards.

So i've been spending some time browsing this forum and I still cannot find what the best way of dumping searched coins are. I'm not sure if i'm just not looking in the right places but I've even tried the search feature. So far the only thing I know to do is to maybe call one of my BoA branches and ask if I can come in with a bag of halves and deposit it into my account. Kinda seems like those "in the know" don't care to share any info...

Anyway, I'm gonna swing by several banks I don't have accounts with later this afternoon and see if I can come up on a random roll or two.

Most of us either dump into a free coin counter at a bank, or just reroll and exchange for cash.

My first 11 boxes produced only 1 40%er. Hang in there.

Thanks for replying :) I really appreciate it. So far I have not ever seen a coin counter at any BoA branch. It looks like I may have to look into opening an account at another bank with a counter for purposes of dumping if I want to do this in any kind of volume. I don't think I can look at a teller in the face on a weekly bases and annoyingly hand them boxes of coins.

Anyway, I had a somewhat interesting day today. I spent over two hours this afternoon hitting up as many banks I can find in my area. I must have been to at least 10-12 of them. The second bank I went to was a huge CitiBank and I walked in looking for halves. The teller lady said that she might have about five rolls in the vault and was actually thanking me to take it off her hands. She came out saying she actually had six and I said I was happy to take them. I got really excited when I saw that two of the rolls were HWR's in vintage waxy-brown paper. The other four were MWR's with a "Boyd Gaming" print on it. I think it must have been a customer who brought them in after visiting Vegas. She asked me if I was a collector and wished me luck to find something.

Anyway, I didn't wait so I started ripping through them in the car. The HWR's were skunks but one of the Boyd Gaming ones produced a single '64! I couldn't believe it when I saw a silver rim in the stack. I know you all probably know the feeling much better than I do. One of them even appeared to be a roll of un-circulated 2001's.

I continued searching for banks and found another one who said they had $50 dollars worth. They initially told me that a customer recently bought $450 of them and they had $50 left from the box. Then they told me that they only have them because customers brought them in. Immediately I noticed that they were rewrapped MWR's because the crimps were all hand done. One of the rolls even had tape around it and sharpied-out writing which I assume was the depositor's bank account #. I bought them all anyway and they turned out to be skunks.

The rest of the banks I went to either had nothing or only had one or two halves in their trays. Of course this time I made sure I looked at them before turning them away. Some banks flat out told me that they cannot sell to non-account holders anyway.

The last bank I went to was this Chase bank and the teller who was an incredibly good looking Russian/European girl was really nice and mentioned that she had a box. Then she very openly asked me if I was a coin collector, to which I said yes. She then said that the box she had was actually customer turn-ins and were likely searched through and that she had a lot of customers who were also collectors. I guess I can't be too surprised since there are like a million people living in my neighborhood alone.

One interesting thing to note is that in another CitiBank, the guy mentioned that they did had halves but I would have to come back tomorrow because only the vault manager can get it. He said that they were in $25 rolls. I even asked him again if they were halves as I've never heard of a $25 roll of halves before. Not sure if it's worth going back tomorrow?

All in all, it wasn't a bad day. I guess finding one '64 in $110 dollars worth of halves ain't so bad! But boy it's exhausing having to drive all around. It seems like there are only two ways to find silver now. Either order boxes repeatedly and hope to get lucky, or be lucky enough to hit a bank just after some old customer turns in some really old coins. Because it seems like they will never had them in stock otherwise and I would be pointless to swing by them all on a regular basis.'

Brace yourself for disappointment with the $25 rolls, those are a common roll amount for $1 presidential coins.

That's what I was thinking! I might just call tomorrow and ask, that way I won't have to waste my time driving down. I did run it by them like 2-3 times asking if they were half dollars and he replied to the affirmative.
