I know, I know, I'm probably going to sound stupid...

For those penny hunters out there, what do you guys say when tellers ask you why you're getting a full box of pennies? I realize that silver is a taboo word to use, but is saying "I'm looking for copper" or "I'm looking for wheaties" breaking some form of rule?

I don't really have the cash to do more than pennies or nickels in any quanity, and most of the banks around here with coin counters have limitations on dumping more than $200, otherwise I'd be going for dimes and halfs.

Since I didn't really know how to get a full box, just got two roles of pennies today and found a 1917 wheatie. 8)

Say youre a coin collector, playing poker, lost a bet and youre paying in pennies, or come up with somthing witty on your own. It's truely becomes an auto response after the first couple times you answer a teller. Or you can say, it's none of your business...because it's not. Probably not the best one, but an option nonetheless.

The first post on this forum answers a ton of questions, BEGINNERS GUIDE TO CRH

I don't usually get asked questions when I ask for coins (unless I have to explain what a half dollar is) - most tellers don't usually seem to care much why I want the coins. But one teller did ask me recently about pennies and I told her about only dates '82 and earlier being copper. But it is really no big deal if you mention why your looking for pennies/cents - they don't generally have much value anyway and usually require a lot of searching. And nice find on that '17 - from only 2 rolls? Sounds like you are off to a good start. :)

Btw, it's a good idea to always ask for loose and cwr halves when your @ a bank - that doesn't usually require much money and you can get some great finds that way. Since I'm assuming you live in Texas - I won't have to worry about any more competition for me by giving that small bit of advise.

Good luck & HH

I tell them I have an autistic newphew who loves looking at coins and I get him boxes and he goes through them and loses them. Most people dont understand autisam they just think of rainman and it makes sense. Dimes you can edge search if they are clear wrapped so you dont have to dump at a machine. Get pennys flip them on ebay ot here or other sites and build a bankroll to halves

:laughing7: Autistic Nephew.

I am using this one, as I am out of fresh material. "yeah his dad's in jail and his mom is in rehab. it keeps him busy for hours while I babysit him, and work at the same time."

Lately I've been going with the excuse that their for my business. Sometimes they ask if I have a business account but its always easy to shrug them off. I usually just tell them that my business is to small for the larger more complicated accounts. It seems to have made some of the banks more willing to order boxes for me.

I was a huge arcade player in the 80s and have my own emulator that runs 400+ games and a full sized arcade cabinet with all the bells and whistles - The track ball is awesome on Missile Command and Centipede - Anyhow, I thought it would always be awesome to open a dime arcade filled with all the games from the late 70s and 80s. Why not live that dream and pretend I have one?

All the tellers think I run 3 dime arcades East of Des Moines with 2 in Illinois. I have great conversations with tellers my age about all the old games and it has really established a great rapport with them. This fairy tale has been an excellent way to explain large dumps of dimes as well as random box pick ups.

I tell them I'm trying to fill my Dansco penny book. I actually started a half dollar collection just so I could tell them the same thing about halves. It also helps if your old and bald. :laughing7: :laughing7:

you don't need any fancy or outlandish reason

Just say I'm a collector and I like to go through them.

I've found telling them that I'm a collector is the best way to go. Because often, oh, you are a collector, do you want these Ikes? Or, oh, a collector? You know that we have these silver eagles that we haven't sold in a few years, I'll sell them to you for $30. You have nothing to lose when you tell them you are a collector and a lot to gain. Don't worry if a teller is a collector, chances are, you will have some overlap, does that teller collect pennies? Trade in some wheats for some silver. Is the teller obsessed with even "junk" world coins but has no interest in US silver? Trade them some world coin for some silver. Etc.

Tellers aren't your competition, they are your best help. Building a network of tellers who like you is the best way to find good things.

I couldn't agree more!

My experience has been that the tellers will connect the dots and realize you are a collector when you continue to come back for coin. When they ask if I'm a collector, I just tell them that I'm trying to fill an album in my spare time.
