Primary Interest:
All Treasure Hunting
I have been so excited lately. First I've wanted to get into a metal detector since I was around 10, now I'm in my late 30's. Was reading a book that contained various legends and mysteries of Utah. OK, I was reading it specifically for the Bigfoot chapter. However it had all these other really great chapters about lost treasures and such. Yes, it would be awesome to come across some huge treasure but I was thinking man that would be cool to just find little stuff, coins etc. and there's a lot of places in Utah to find such things big and small. So now I have been reading up on history, I have been getting any book I can from the library about history of Utah, it's gold and similar things. I'm getting into this.

Anyway, Oh, I wish someone would just tell me what to buy. I know it depends on what I am going to do. I want something that can go big and deep but that can also go top surface. I was taking a look at the Garrett 2500 with the Eagle Point Treasure Hound attachment. I was read mixed reviews. Some say good some say bad. Then I came across a posting that talked about VLF vs PI. So then I looked at the Garrett ATX Extreme because I also want something that can pick up gold. I read the PI are more likely to be able to do something like this. I'm not opposed to other brands either, I just came across those two in my readings.

Please help..... also if you have any info on bigfoot that would be cool as well.

Okay your excited and ready to buy your first MD. Don't buy just yet as you have some more research to do. I can name models and brands but you need to decide for yourself. First off you should get a VLF because it has discrimination unless you enjoy digging birdshot more than a foot down. also forget the two box till you have narrowed down where a cache might be buried. Get Garrett's book on Successful Coin Hunting and buy a Tesoro Vaquero.

Hi Carp welcome to the board !
Minelab Xterras are very good and you can buy different coils for different types of hunting. If you have money to spend my favorite machine is the E-Trac , wish now that I had skipped the safari and gone straight to it ! Garret pro-pointer and leshe hand digger are top items , you should invest in a good digging tool or at least look into them.

Welcome Aboard! Take a look at Sub-Forums: Utah for information (i.e., clubs, etc.) directly related to your state.

Welcome to TNET!

Hello, welcome aboard and good luck!

doesn't make a difference what you buy first; if you stay with hobby, you will buy something else anyways...

There are different machines for different types of detecting. They are like "tools in the toolbox". If you plan to look for small gold (nuggets) and also want it to be waterproof, then the Garrett ATX is a good choice. It's not the best choice for trashy areas searching for coins and jewelry, because with no discrimination you will spend a lot of time digging nails.Feel free to give me a call or PM and I'll try to help you make a decision on a machine to fit your needs.

Welcome Carp! I will not attempt to sound smart on what type of detector to buy because everyone above me in this thread has way more knowledge than I do.

What I did want to say was that I live in Utah too and have just gotten into the hobby myself!

But what I REALLY wanted to say is.... I saw bigfoot up Cedar Canyon one day.... Seriously.
