Hi gang,
I'm so new I don't even own a metal detector yet, and after reading various horror stories on the internet, I'm apprehensive about buying one. I live in New Jersey and from what I've read this is one of the least treasure hunter friendly states in the nation. It seems the laws are quite convoluted about where and what we are actually allowed to dig. I understand that national, state, county, and local parks are off limits, as well as historical sites, and that I should fill in any holes I dig, no trespassing, etc, but this doesn't leave much to explore. Can anyone offer some serious advice about where I'm allowed to detect in NJ? What about public beaches? Are they open for metal detecting or no? Thanks in advance.
Ben

Welcome to Tnet from Lake Champlain. Don't believe all you read on the net, just what you read here. You'll see differing opinions, but all are useful. Bonjour:hello2:

Prosper in 2013!

Welcome from Idaho!
I really have a lot of compassion for you folks out in some of those eastern states. I had no idea how regulated, restricted, and controlled you people are, over there. Good Grief! You folks need to pay better attention to who's running for office and who's side they're on....yours, or themselves. I couldn't live there. No way. This is just plain S-A-D. Should never be happening in the USA... NEVER!
Anyway, I do have a suggestion, which may help you out. A couple of friends & I have thought about posting up some fliers and taking out one of those free ads in our local communities. We thought it would be a good community service to offer our MD experience to private owners and businesses. Many have lost keys, jewelry, or have had previous generations lose wedding rings, buried caches, and other valuables. Many have no idea how to go about finding their lost wares and they might like to have someone to come out and give them a helping hand to find their lost valuables. Most often the land owners will let you keep the little stuff, but may even reward you for your help if you are successful to find their valuables.
If you are a beginner, simply state it is just a hobby and you are trying to get more experience. If you have been doing this a while, you could even offer to split anything of value with the owner. I can see how this could become a potentially lucrative part-time business, in some areas. Either way, it sure sounds like a lot of fun, even if you offer to do it for free. It would be interesting to see what kind of response you may get, just by advertising a little bit.

How does this sound? "Have Metal Detector - will travel" or "Metal Detection Hobbyist - Your property detected for lost valuables & relics."
"Find what your property been hiding - Property Metal Detection services offered"

You'll never know til you try, so have some fun with this. Who knows, you just might land something BIG Prosper in 2013! - JSpinner

You might consider browsing Sub-Forums: New Jersey for information (i.e., clubs, hunts, finds, legends, maps, etc.) directly related to your state.
