New 78 Mogans

Probably not heated - tarnish in the form of silver oxide often forms on coins that were kept in some kinds of holders. The old blue Whitman coin books, for instance, were not of the archival-type inert material that would keep acids in the cardboard from migrating onto the silver. Some people like the toning found on silver coins, others don't.

I'm sticking with -
the first coin shown was obviously heated around the rim / edges to created the color
no question about it

It's known as target toning and from chemicals in the old albums....

You're wrong. Bradyboy is correct. The first coin has been cleaned and artificially toned. I am 100% sure of this fact. I know what natural toning looks like, and that is NOT it.

As for the other two coins, they both look to have been cleaned at some point in time.

For future reference, here is what natural toning looks like on coins from my own collection:

Cosmic,

Want some more good news? Your 7/8 TF is a VAM 41 (Top 100) and your 7TF is a VAM 162 (Hot 50). If you want to view diagnostics, visit here ... http://www.vamworld.com/1878-P+VAMs

As a note to those unfamiliar with VAMs (named after Leroy Van Allen and George Mallis ... pioneers in research of Morgan and Peace dollar die varieties), every Morgan and Peace dollar is a VAM. A few carry significant premiums in value, these two have a moderate premium.

I didn't want to start a new thread for this...but I have a beautiful MS 1889 "high 9" variety Morgan. Does this variety have a premium?

Best Wishes,

Buckleboy

Buckleboy,

Sorry, it doesn't (http://www.vamworld.com/1889-P+VAM-7). You'll note at the top of the page are two indicators I2/R3. The first number is collector interest ... a 1 or 2 rating indicates low interest. A 4 or higher might mean a collector premium. The second indicator is the Sheldon Rarity scale (from 1 to 7). Most collectors of VAMs pay premiums for 5~7 only. There are some exceptions.

Darn. :-\ Mine does have the die chip in the 8, as mentioned in the link. Oh well, it's a beautiful MS-65 that I paid 20 bucks for in the early 90's.

Thanks for your help.

I didn't mean to offend. I've made plenty of mistakes in my collecting life, and a few have cost me quite a bit of money. These coin doctors are nothing more than scam artists, and unfortunately, you seem to have been scammed. But now, through your pictures, hopefully others will not be so unlucky.
