Didn't even know what it was til I got it home. How does this happen? To me, this is worse than kittens dying. I'd gladly cherish a worn coin... But this? Please tell me there's some magic solution or cleaning method to fix this besides finding another one. I was told the area I found this was bulldozed to remove dirt so I reckon it brought it closer to the top.

To clean so far, I ran under warm water and dabbed with a makeup brush. The year is 1877 as far as I can tell.

I probably sound like a brat finding a seated and complaining but I know you all will understand

Almost as bad as mine.........A dime from a fire.....Looks like pizza cheese bubbled up
...............HH

tinfoil & spit

That's the safest way with out scratching it. SS

I have to get the dirt off first correct? It's soaking in purified water right now and I was going to brush it with a toothbrush before the lemon bath.

What would cause this kinda corrosion?

it's just a heavy build up on the coin, reactions from the soil on the silver. The lemon juice will take that off, I have seen it do a lot worse than that one.

Be very careful brushing, I would dab and do that very gently. JMO
I believe there is a forum for "how to clean my coins"
I do know there are a lot of opinions about that subject.
Good luck, don't be discouraged, I'm sure there are others out there (of course I have not found one yet)
Put your head down and start digging!

Pretty Please mail it to me ill PM my mailing address! :-)

Boil some water, add baking soda and lemon juice, lay tinfoil on bottom and set the coin on foil, it will start looking like an alka seltzer tab and the gunk just bubbles away. You can LIGHTLY rub with qtip during Process. I have saved coins this way.

Well first off, I wouldn't be brushing ANY silver coin with a toothbrush! That's just crazy. At most, a lemon juice bath. Read my posts and watch my videos on how to clean silver coins.

Oh yeah, and if you think that kittens dying is better let me break the news to ya. Ya dug a seated quarter. Do you know how much money that was during the Reconstruction era? A lot. Look at my finds list. Do you know how many seated quarters I have dug in 22 years?

Two.

Doesn't matter what condition #3 comes in, I will be jumping up and down in the field. If you want a pristine coin, then go buy an overpriced one in a coin shop.

Thanks for bringing me back down to earth. How long should I keep it in the lemon bath? The two hours its been in there may have worked a small amount can't really tell yet. I'm debating if I should leave it in there overnight...

Very Nice Find! Don't rush the cleaning, let it (Lemon Juice Bath) do it's job. But keep an eye on it and in the end just rinse it with some warm water.

I've heard this works wonders. Seriously. I would be ecstatic with this find. What's worse- I got a sweet signal at a colonial site today, turned out to be a wheatie. Sorry if I don't feel your pain lol. Nice find & hope you can bring it back to life

I usually speed the process up with a little bit of tooth paste, it helps to get into the tight spots, or if you have one a fibre pen tip is also very good and does not damaged the coin. This coin was unidentified because of the build up, it took a week in lemon juice with the tooth paste to clean, the finished coin is the one on the right in the second picture Anglo Saxon in the ground for 1400 years

Holy Moly what a difference.

so it sat in the lemon juice over night and there was a very marginal if any difference. What im debating now is to continue doing a lemon juice bath or try the baking soda water heat and aluminum foil--right now its sitting in purified water while im at work

Hey I've NEVER found a Seated quarter only 4 Seated dimes...that's still an awesome find. I had a friend who found 2 counterfeit Seated Liberty halves: at least yours is real! :icon_thumleft:

better than no seated at all
