Hello All,
I gave my favorite site a rest.
Look what happens when I return, I really can't believe the amount of targets dug in
3.5 hours, and I was only 30 minutes late for my first job of the day :laughing7:
can't really list them all, lots of ship spikes, found the match for my handpunched salt shaker cover ;D
Old lead whistle, local funeral home badge :-\ whale oil lamp burner, .58 ringer with a flat base, never saw one like this...
No stunners, I thought the cookie might be a 2 Reale, Not!
(heavy silver and abalone barrette made me feel a little better, modern finds here ???
I also dug 2 Zincolns :icon_scratch: )
6 old buttons today :hello2:
Mystery button clearly shows a lined field,
I can't identify it :help: rearing horse? :icon_scratch:
'37 Buff, can't see a 'D', but neither do I see the 4th leg :laughing9:
thanks for looking & great digs to everyone

Nice finds! I love going back to my "hunted out" spots after giving them a break. It always amazes me how much is left.

sweet finds, great assortment of goodies

wow that's time well spent.

great bunch of finds.

I can't make it out, what did the cookie coin turn out to be?

Great finds today Herbie, looks like you dug a lot of holes! :icon_thumright:

I see you found a couple of spoons . . . any of those silver? :icon_scratch:

I hope to get out tomorrow, had to work on my front porch today.
Next weekend I have to rent a decksander and re-stain. Lots of fun eh! :laughing7:

Dave

Nice digs Herbie, I know what you mean about coming back to sites. Makes me wonder how I missed some of the obvious signals. Good luck on the next hunt!

Thanks Bob,
Well, I can't make it out either :laughing9:
I never did have a lot of hope for it, the reading was close to foil >:(
I broke a chip off the edge onsite.
the metal that showed was black, leading me to the silver theory.
After removal of the piece, turned out to be copper, figuring an early halfpenny
I keep searching this area, most finds are in poor shape.
It's the occasional decent early Military finds, coppers, gold and thick silvers that keep me comin back.
I have made my best finds here,
I have no doubt there are more, HH to you

Thanks everyone for your replies !
Hi Dave, I'm surprised your Wife doesn't have you hire out the deck job so you can get more diamonds for her :laughing7:
Spoons were both white metal, one from 'the Quincy' whether from hotels in Washington DC and Singapore, or a boat of that name I don't know.
The only Silver I got was the barrette, a hefty 10 grams :hello2: I found out last night I was being observed and photographed when I found it.
I know the photo is the general area where I found it, but shovel on ground shows that I was trying to ID a target, and that piece needed no ID, it was an earringer!
The reason for the modern finds is that I had followed the coastline out of my usual spot, there is nothing 'Modern' at Cob Cove.
There is a lot of intrigue among the local residents about what I'm doing on the mud,
I can understand, they see me scan, dig, pocket. scan, dig, pocket. over and over.
I would wonder too. (No, I would get a metal detector myself and find out)
Most people on the coast know me, this photographer sent the photo to another resident who is a good friend and he forwarded it to me. note that bulging back pocket, among others ;D
Yesterdays hunt required 3 return trips to the truck to unload, it felt like I dug a thousand targets :tongue3:
Best to You and the Girls! HH Herbie.

Holy cow Herbie! :o Did you have you detector turned on the first time out there? :tongue3: :laughing9:
Some nice recoveries there. I like the funeral home relic and those spoons. ;D

What is the buckle type thing in the third picture down?

You find some really interesting stuff! :headbang: :notworthy:

Nice hunt! The nails are interesting, might be a ship somewhere? :read2:
The funeral tag gave me the creeps, some one must had pured some ashes in the water.
How did you get the Cookie of the coin?

HH//Alessandro

Nice hunt Herbie! Love the spoons and the coins--good luck your next trip there!

Slasher,
I've found many pieces of that ornate pewter shoe buckle at this site,
The brass buckle/strap thing is a whatsit for me,
Maybe someone has seen this before :help:

Greetings Alessandro :hello:
Love your Avatar ;D
Great theory on the ashes, maybe someone threw a wooden box into the sea,
I will now return this where I found it.
The spikes all came from one area, I could have dug them all day,
Most are broken, :dontknow: why, I can't figure.
If you wanted to dispose of a wooden ship, wouldn't burning it be a better idea than
disassembling it ? (the only theory I can come up with for the hundreds of broken spikes there).
The cookie, since it was giving a low reading, and a chip broken off the edge showed very little metal left, I just twisted it til it cracked & pulled it apart.
I cleaned the copper wafer (no detail), the slid it back into the cookie,
neat as can be :D
If these give a high reading, I will take more care, see my reply to this post
for details on my method: http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,406268.0.html
Once in a while the cookies can yield decent coins, was quite surprised when a 1620s cob with fair detail popped out of one :o
Good to hear from you! best digs

Wanted to add this,
First of the handpunched pewter saltshaker covers, dug in January.
Love the random holes, I wonder what the shakers were made of :dontknow:
I can't see any reason why someone would discard or lose just the covers,
Maybe they got silver replacements & threw out the pewters ??
This doesn't fit into old Yankees thrifty habits.
Baffling.
but a matching pair is so much better than a single.
the same thing happened with two pairs of Shoe button covers I found,
dug one, months later got the matches, great stuff :D
HH to You All

Blaah, after comparing the pix of the shaker covers, no match :'(
But so close, and from the same site,
maybe different for salt and pepper :icon_scratch:
need to pull the january find and compare diameters.
I have some sterling shakers that have different sized holes in matched pairs.

I have a bunch of them and found one the other day. I always assumed they were part of a harness or something.
