I just came across this while selling some of my collection on ebay. Follow the link to see pictures of it.

Ultra RARE Double Error 1942 Mercury dime with necklace!!!! | eBay

I have never seen another mercury dime with a necklace around the neck like this one has. There are two intersecting lines going around the neck. Can anyone give me an idea of what the name of the error is and how much to value it at?

Also I have been looking at 1942/1 auctions and I can't even see the 1 in the dates of most of them but they still sell for around 400. What are the key things to look for or is the 1942 D always an overdate?

I looks as if someone took a very sharp blade to the neck and made cuts on it. The raised edge near the date appears to be from the reeded edge being punched. The dime from the pictures appears to be worth $2.30. I am pretty sure you are the one that is selling it so you might want to take better pics.

Thanks for the reply. Looking at this coin up close, it seems impossible that anyone could have crafted it this way because the lines are perfect and have definitely been worked by a machine. If you are correct it may explain why I have not been able to find another coin like it. Out of 100 plus viewers, no one has an answer for it. I'll take some finer pictures and post them on here and ebay. The lines are so good that you don't even notice they shouldn't be there unless you look at another mercury dime.

absolutely impossible. Unfortunately it is not a coin error the only way a coin will end up with an error similar is if there was a cracked die or a flawed planchet during the minting process. If it were a cracked die the X would be almost raised up but not a canyon type cut. If it where a planchet error then it would not be a perfect X even if someone deliberately put it in the planchet before the minting process it would not look like that. Second the coin is being represented as an uncirculated coin which it is not. Maybe VG-XF details but not UNC. Even if it were a die crack or a planchet error it would not bring $1000 maybe $10-15 at most. I posted some pics the first is a planchet error and the second is a die crack. Hope that helps but I hate to say its what we call in the coin world a graffiti coin.
