Beach & Shallow Water Hunting
The ranch had a good size burn early in July. We found about two or three pounds of flakes in about an hour or so without really trying...the variety of materials is fascinating...jasper of many colors, obsidian, carnelian, chalcedony, fine grained basalt and such. Lots more out there but just let it lay, in fact most of these flakes will go back too. Found a bunch of agates too and some petrified wood. The only real artifact was a broken base of an obsidian point.

Awesome colors! We just tumbled a bunch of my flakes and they turned out really cool! With those colors, you'd have some pretty cool tumbled rocks!

Good grief all those beautiful flakes and not even a broken artifact out of those. What a shame.

Those are gorgeous materials and colors! I found 2 spots on a trail on our farm that washes down to the creek that have loads of flakes...not a point in site. I agree about taking up flint knapping! I have a great appreciation for the workmanship that goes into each point and it's really relaxing (even if your best points don't resemble anything). I just bought some tumbled flakes for my granddaughter at an artifact show and they are really pretty even though they aren't points.

Nice- I find areas like that too- mostly obsidian flakes and if I'm lucky, a broken worked piece like you found....the hunt continues.

that is some nice material. Wish we had it around here. I think there is jasper around here but rare to come across

Those flakes are so nice I would take them and put them in a clear glass vase and put in on my kitchen table for decoration.

Did you buy them at the Cartersville show, I was selling the polished stones.

You'll have to agree that they prefered utilizing that red and yellow jasper. Nice Pickens! :icon_thumleft:

I didnt realize people saved this stuff. You see lots of beautiful lithic debris like this here in AZ. I leave it where its at to mark the location of the site. Its not good to take every last little piece.

fist size chunks of both are easy to find here....obsidian less so...a lot of chalcedony too, like these..all found at the same time as the flakes.

i didn't begin to pick it all up, not even close...but I don't expect to keep it all either.

I brought home 30# of debitage from this winters hunt in the S.W. Nothing as colorful as Macs. I brought it home to show other flintknappers the different materials that were brought in and used in some of the camps. Hardly any of the flakes I brought home were from materials natural to the area. The larger flakes will be heat treated and I will try my hand at working them into a point.

I'd rather see it picked up than plowed over for the next housing development. All depends on where you live I suppose.....
Arizona, I know, is a wasteland of flakes.

If the pieces are decent I bag it all up and give it away at shows. People love the colors
