Went out for a short hunt today because it was below 95 degrees here in central Virginia. DV jr and I decided to hunt along a hill on our neighbors property we had seldom hit. We weren't finding much so I decided to move a little further up the hillside when I picked up a VERY strong signal and figured I had found an old car part or other such debris. I only had to remove about three inches of root mat when I hit a very solid and heavy sounding item. This immediately drew the attention of my son and I figured I had gotten lucky with a large shell frag. I quickly realized it was a 12 lb solid shot as I scooped it out of the hole! It appears to be of Union origin but it does have a fairly prominent seam, so who knows? More proof that no field, woods or lot is ever completely hunted out! ;D

A cannon ball, now how cool is that. Now go get the rest.

Nice find and a real good job on the clean up. Now go back and find the other three they fired that day.

I have a question since I am a newbie in regards to knowing about cannon balls. Is it solid or is there gunpowder inside?

Is there a way to know if one has powder in it? Like maybe there would be a fuse or hole of some sort?

Thanks.

Yep, fuse or hole remaining. If there's a lot of rust you have to make sure it's not covering it.
