Well that's the way it goes sometimes. A true case of beginners luck ;D

Keep looking in very old places and you'll get yours.

Best places to look for Large Cents and Colonials are around old (pre-1880) foundations and houses, old picnic groves and any other site that dates 1880 and before.
I had hit a pre-construction site of an old golf course 2 years ago, that happened to be a picnic grounds and farmhouse in the 1800's. Large cents and Colonials were strewn about the 250 acre site. My oldest from there was a 1722 Rosa Americana 2 pence, with over 20 Colonials (Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Jersey, New York) found and a few Large Cents.
Another great spot was an old Prayer meeting site from the 1800's, where hundreds of people would gather to hear the travelling preacher.

The key word here is - RESEARCH!!!!!!!!!

You fellows back east have all the luck. Here in mid-Kansas about all there is old to find is wheat cents. There wasn't much population until 1900 and no one then could afford to lose a penny. I've been coin-shooting since the mid 60's and have yet to find an Indian head with my detector. I used to find them in change, however.

yeah ,the midwest limits the age of coin finds, but hey just finding any coin is sweet!!
