Negative or Neutral?

Just had my first truly negative buying experience this week, and I was wondering what kind of feedback you guys thing is fitting. I am not one to leave a quick negative, but I think the seller might deserve it in this case.

Here's what happened, I found a group of hats that I wanted to buy to break up and sell back on e-bay, the price was right so I decided to bid. The seller had 0 feedback, but I had low feedback once too so I decided to give them the benefit of the doubt and go for it. I won the auction, paid, and then then today noticed that my paypal account had had a refund applied. I sent a message to the seller asking what was up, and they said (direct quote) "it was a wrong price and I couldn't change it til the item ended thats y I gave u a refund. im new to the auction thing kinda confusing but im.very sorry". So I'm not too happy, there were some pretty great hats in the lot that I could have flipped for a tidy profit, and the seller did not check in with me at all before refunding. They say it was a mistake, but I think it could easily be a case of seller regret. They also recently gained a neutral feedback saying "buyer is quick to refund if not happy with the price." That being said, if I give them a negative they will have -1 feedback, which will pretty much screw over their chances of using that account for anything again. Frankly they seem pretty clueless, so might I feel a little bad negging them when they've just started.

So what do you guys think, is this worth giving a negative feedback or just a neutral? I can't decide so I figured I'd ask and get some outside opinions. Thanks in advance for your responses!

You can wait and see if he gets any other neutrals or negs. Then you won't have trouble deciding.

I have never left a neutral or negative yet as I was always treated as I would treat others. In a case like this I would be tempted to "cull" bad selling practices or at least message them to help them become aware of poor selling practices.

I sent them a polite message saying that I wasn't very happy with how it turned out and that they should contact me (and their future customers) before refunding their money. I also suggested starting auctions at a price that they would be happy receiving in order to prevent future issues. They messaged me back and just said "thanks" so at least they are responsive. I don't know if I have the heart to give a negative even thought it was a blatant breaking of ebay policy, I just think they have no idea what they are doing. That being said, if there was something in the lot that I really wanted for myself/that was hard to find then I would have been very upset and definitely would leave negative feedback.

If they get away with bad business practices, they will continue to do the same to their future customers.
I have stared many auctions at .99 cents. You get a lot of bids. But...If it does not end where I wanted it to, I deal with it!
You cannot predict where an Ebay auction will end. To many variables aka...people.

I would not even give this more than 30 seconds of consideration. This is what negative feedback was meant for! If you don't leave a negative, he will just keep doing this kind of nonsense.

Leave a well deserved negative and move on...

Noobies gotta start somewhere, but letting them skate with shady auction practices will give them the idea they can get away it. I screwed myself about a month ago. Listed something for $225 and had a couple of offers at $160. I declined them and when the listing ended I relisted as a true auction. It sold for $53, but I honored the sale. It wasn't the buyer's fault he got a great deal, it was mine for being a *******. Pigs get fat, hogs get slaughtered.

******* = Below average intelligence donkey.

Who said this guy was a newbie? He may have zero feedback because he got too many negs and decided to start over with a new name.

Blast him with a neg.

You can end an auction early. It can cost you final value fees if you have done it repeatedly. I think the Thanks might have pushed me over the edge.

You asked for it - so heres my two cents. Turn the other cheek. I wouldn't leave a negative. It's possible this is a desperate person selling to cover an important debt (medical, legal, rent, --- even food for some). You got your money back. Yes, you technically have " cover damages" if you had to buy new hats or lost profits under the UCC, but it's hats and it's ebay. Why make someone else miserable over something like this without "first walking a mile in their shoes". If it's a truly a wart on the otherside of the transaction - well things have a way of working out and warts rarely win in the end.

I don't care if a seller is selling for medical bills, funeral expenses, crack, or a new car... they should list the item for the least they will take or honor the price it sold for if they took a gamble and started low and didn't get what they wanted. If they make a mistake in a listing, then they should end it and explain to the bidders. You don't let the auction run it's course and let the buyer pay, then give a refund. Since this seller has only one feedback from someone who had the same thing happen to them, I would say this seller is playing games, letting his items go and if they don't end for a price he likes, he just renegs on the deal. That's no way to be and you aren't helping him or anyone else by letting it slide if you do. I'd neg him.

Dang! I wish I could give a neg on that seller on top of the one you should give. What a chump!

And what if the op missed out on other auctions since he knew he won this? The seller wasted his time and cost him money, neg him and report him to eBay as playing games!

BOOM !! Let the hammer drop, my friend, Jerseyben hit the nail on the head..don't sugar coat it with "he is new and will learn"...he deserves a negative, it is probably a new account because he has been banned or shut down one or more times! I have on MANY occasions sold something at a loss...and I packed it up and shipped it away..and ate it because that's how it goes, you can't dangle the carrot and then yank it back when you are not happy with the terms. ddf
