I own a Whites Eagle Spectrum. I truly love this detector. It has been with me for nearly ten years but I'm looking to upgrade to some new technology. What detector would you choose for under a grand and why ? I've owned Tesoro, whites, and Garrett. Im mainly a coinshooter and relic hunter. I'm sure this has been asked many times before but I need and unbiased opinion. Thanks in advance. Happy Swinging, Aladetector.

but I need and unbiased opinion.

Well then, that won't happen... everyone owns the best machine there is and spent a lot of money on it because it's the best... no bias there 'eh?

We have a place in St. Pete where you can rent different machines and try them out. Perhaps you could find a dealer near you and 'test drive' some.

Try them out on your test garden and that should really help!

Good luck with what ever you choose.

No such luck here. I understand about brand loyalty and how some will think there's is the best.

Well then, I have to say....'see my list to the left'. They are the best.

I came from Whites machines not unlike your Eagle spectrum. That was until I perpetually got my b*tt kicked by guys here using the Explorer. At least in deep-turf situations, where good TID at depth is the name-of-the-game. So I got one, and forced myself to learn it (will drive you bonkers and first). And immediately I gained about 2" in depth in deep-turf hunting.

You can get a used Explorer II for less than a grand I'd think. Make sure you get one with the sun-ray probe. And then the best way to learn it, is to hook up with someone who is proficient, to go out and trade off flagged signals to compare. Ie.: not just a "sandbox hunter", but someone who routinely comes in with the oldies. Because since the explorer is so tone-specific, and since you're coming from a Whites world, the explorer is an altogether different beast. But once mastered, you'll know you got the extra depth you wanted, while retaining even more accurate TIDs.
