It looks like a rock bit for a jackleg drill used in hardrock mining. Jimbob

Yep,they also canaled water through the hole,to keep the dust down,Thousands of miners died of silicosis or "Rocks in the Box)from breathing the quartz rock dust,the old drills were called widow makers for that reason :thumbsup:
