Need technical help with an old Garrett

I picked up a like new Garrett Master Hunter 7 ADS II. Worked great until this weekend when I noticed it was giving me a lot of twitter and ghost signals. I swapped batteries tonight based on a tip from a fellow Tnetter which seemed to help. However, any time I bump the coil on a small clod of dirt, etc I get the same twittering in my headphones as if I have a loose wire or something. Is this something I can troubleshoot myself or do I have to take it in?

Because the coil is filled with foam instead of resin the foam deteriorates and allows the coil wires to move I expect. If you can swap out the Crossfire search coil with another one you might be able to tell which coil is bad. Garrett can tell you if any other coils are available for it.

After all the reading I have been doing tonight on Garrett, that is sound advice and I will be giving them a call this week. I am still learning on my Garrett but so far I am really happy with it! I would love to have it looked at anyway to make sure its in tiptop shape. Thanks!

You got an excellent metal detector, which can really hold its own to depth comparing it to what is out there today. If you are getting a lot of falsing or ghost signals, especially if the coil hits an object, try tightening up the search coil wire as it is wound up the shaft. A moving coil wire can also be picked up as a target.

Good luck with your new machine Eric

....Fibberjibber....Now what detector do you have??......You have combined the name of 2 different models......There is an ADS II and also there is an ADS 7 and also there is an ADS 7X but there is no such thing as an 7ADS II......Now if your detector is the ADS II or the ADS 7.....Then it uses the older 5.5 KHZ coils......but if it is the ADS 7X then it uses the Crossfire Coils ...and the 2 different type coils are not interchangeable........Joe

If you are brave enough, you can try repairing the coil yourself, here is a video from youtube that shows the repair of a minelab coil but the general principal is the same, loose wiring:

Here is another showing a coiltek coil repair:

hope these help

Read the owner's manual thoroughly. Do some basic air testing. Crank down the sens. Garrett will take care of you if it's brain dead. By the way, who says twitters and ghost signals are a bad thing?

Great advise. Call Garrett they will take care of you.
