That's pretty cool. I don't know a lot about error coins but it looks like a clipped planchet error to me. If it is its a nice find.

clipped planchet errror, a nice one too. $2 - $5 coin, not bad for 5 cents!

Clipped planchet all right, you will come across them every once in a while. I just add them to my error-roll, kind'a fun to bag 'em in the wild.

page 420 of REDBOOK lists value at $3. NICE FIND!!!!!. this week I sold a jeff "CUD" error and an off-center jeff for total $25 on ebay. a tip for you-- check all 2005-d jeffs for the SPEARED BISON, a die crack from the "D" to bison's butt that looks like a spear. one was found by a TNETer recently.
Got this lil guy in a roll the other day. Think this was a man made error?? I'm thinking it is but I wanted to get a second opinion... Thanks in advance!

I may be mistaken, but I seem to recall that there are two "speared bison" errors, one that is speared through the rear haunches (aka "butt"), and another speared through the shoulders. In any case, it seems like the kind of error that might amount to some semi-serious $ over time...

speared bison grade 20 at $12, grade 60 at $120 in PCGS price guide. they only show 1 version, and I recall a tnet recent post with a photo showing die crack from "D" down to the rump. hope you are the "WOLF" who gets to feast on a speared carcass.

To ensure you have a clipped planchet - you can see that a regular nickle fits snugly inside the cut out potion of your error-coin!

Thats Wild those are in Circulation...You would think someone would keep it out of Curosity....Great Find!

Here is a pic of the speared bison I found. The coin is unfortunately in lousy shape. Still a really exciting find though.
