it's roughly 5-6" in length...

Might be a brace off something. The flat part may have been attached to wood at one time and since then rotted away.

thanks for your feedback Lumbercamp, it was found in the southern region of the motherlode, ca and was found in a stream under some large rocks, along with an old bucket who's bottom had rotted out... i thought it was a strange place for it to be found but who knows, with all of the ranching/farming equipment/metals around and such, like you mentioned, definately appeares to have been bolted to something of some sorts... the longer part of it almost looks as though it was designed to be perhaps driving into the ground? thanks again...

They appear to be carriage bolts. Maybe it's from an old carriage.
