Any info on this badge, year, what does S V mean, what was it for. Yes still cloth in the pin and the badge is about half dollar size. Thanks

Any towns nearby named San V---- or South V-----? Might be a deputy badge for such a town. Or perhaps Sheriff Volunteer? Dunno just guessing.

That appears to be a decoration off of a large, thick piece of cloth, such as a horse blanket. I have never seen a pin set up like that on badges worn on officer's uniforms. "SV" may be Sarasota Volunteers or something similar, used on a cavalry horse blanket? (just a stretch...:laughing7:, I know) It is a very cool piece, congrats. Sub8-)

Sons of Veterans?
Edit-- probably not, as usually this fraternal group has the letters intertwined

I'm posting for a Friend, not sure were he found but assume in Ga. were he lives. They do hunt some civil war camps.

I agree with sub that its not meant for uniform wear of an officer. I do some collecting and follow antique law enforcement badges and insignia and have never seen that type of attachment for uniform wear. Unless its a one of a kind for some special purpose it must be some other type of insignia like mentioned for tack or etc.

I've seen WW2 German hat badges with similar attachment pins folded over on the back. They would be pushed through the material and folded over to keep them in place.

Seems odd for it to be SV when that orientation would put the star upside down. Surely whoever stamped the letters would have placed them properly. Do the attachment pins run parallel with the letter placement? The letters could be something else, like an S with an inverted V over it. The V does look like a bigger font than the S. Pretty neat pin though, but I do wonder about the letter config.

True, with the star upside down (pentagram) it may have been a reference to the Masons...? Sub 8-)
