Hi all. Last Christmas, my brother-in-law gave me a Garrett TA 100. His parents gave to him the Christmas before, but apparently he had no interest in it. Boy! Is he missin out!! Since this spring i have found a hobby that i'm gonna love for years to come. I go md'ing every chance i get. I am fortunate to be living in New Bern NC, which was the original State Capitol back in the 1700's. And there was also quite a bit of Civil War activity all over this area.
Anyway...to the point. In the middle of historic downtown, across the street from where i work, a building has come down and most of the concret and parking lot were torn up. I have hit that lot 3 times while i had the chance and found 2 wheats (1909 and 1919), a 1907 IH, 1920 Standing Liberty Quarter, and 2 musket balls. Theres some good stuff down there, but there is also an incredible amount of rusted iron spread all through-out the area. These range from nails to nuts and bolts, and they are making it impossible to pick out "solid" targets. I feel like i'm learning the nature and tones of my machine, but man i'm getting descouraged with all that iron. I've tried different descrimation settings, swing speed, everything i know how to try. The rusted iron seems to give me a very irratic, broken signal. and half the time will not beep in the same spot 3 or 4 swings in a row. Does this sound like a common signal for iron? There are so many signals like this, that it seems impossible to clear them out. By the end of this week i expect them to start workin on the new structure, so time is limited. was hoping to get a few more treasures out of that lot before its covered again for another 50 yrs. Anyone have suggestions on what i'm doing or not doing, to increase my success? Thx for any help.

1st...congrats of the nice finds.

2nd...the only way to handle large chunks of iron scrap is to dig it and get it out of the way. If it's mainly square nails and tiny pieces, some detectors are able to tune this stuff out. My Tesoro found me a silver Merc in a pile of square nails.

In your historic location you may want to dig the bigger chunks of iron. Those iron relics may be you biggest finds. If you're not into relics, sell them on ebay. You'd be shocked what a piece of iron decoration or certain early 19th century tools will fetch at the auction. And those early cast toys are super hot.

If I were going to hunt your site I'd use a Nautilus IIB with a 6 inch coil, it's like a coin rifle.

Happy hunting.

Badger

Hey Joe, Badger is the King of Nails & Iron, he gives good advice. Also if you have time, try detecting a small area, say 10'x10' & dig every signal, get all the iron out of the way & you may find coins underneath the iron. Also in a place like that try a smaller coil, makes it easier to target the coins between the nails. Good luck & we all look forward to pics of your finds. ;D

Tried again.

Well i noticed today that they pulled up all the concrete up to the sidewalk. So i thought i'd have another go at it and work a certain area like Pighty P and Badger suggested. I pulled about 4 or 5 pounds of iron objets out of the ground along with a 1918 Wheat, that was in very nice condition, i just rinsed it with a little water and no further cleaning need. that was all. I'm workin on taking some pics to post. Thx for the advice. Had you guys not responded, i prolly would have given up on that lot. Might go back tomorrow night and work that 8x30' stetch again.
HH foks. talk again soon :)

Torn up sidewalks are a goldmine.........or a silvermine...... ??? Very good places to hunt for old coins. Id keep going back til they pour new concrete, Im sure theres more there Joe. Look forward to seeing the wheaty, much older than my oldest wheaty! WTG! ;D

I'm staring to grow a real affinity for iron relics. I have been digging a ton out of my back yard. Didn't get a chance to get out today due to the torential rains but will be back at it tomorrow. Pic to follow.

1918 Wheat

heres a pic of that last wheat i found, came out of the dirt just like this. just rinsed it with water. I'm pleased ;D
