Need some help with recent find from CW area

Dont know how to explain this piece. My parents found the item and was wondering what it might be. Some thoughts that it was mounted on a rifle for the strap. The area we searched has turned up multiple relics from the CW. It could just be some scrap metal from the area. Any help would be appreciated.

Sort of hard to tell from the photo, but is the main portion of twisted construction? Can you post a photo looking at the side view? Thanks

Could be hand fashioned for horse hardware. Interesting relic and I am sure it will be identified. Seems I have dug or seen something similiar
