Although I rarely post here, I read this forum daily, & I have grown to respect members' opinions. With that in mind, I need to lean on some of you oldtimers that deal in coins as a sideline to MDing.

As a rule, I don't sell my MDing finds, but...

Yesterday while trying to get some "starter" coins together for a grandchild that has expressed some collecting interest, I came across a container of old/junk foreign coins I wound up with from a deceased relative. I poured them out on a towel to have a fresh look...I had forotten about them for the last 8-10 years & didn't remember what was in there. Are you gettin' the picture?

Among the other 30-40 coins were 2 copper half cents, over 200 years old! And in EXCELLENT shape!

I spent several hours on the computer last night trying to find out about them. They APPEAR to be totally legitimate...Being the skeptic I am, I first figured they were phonies. The individual I got them from was not a collector of anything, & a worker-bee, not wealthy. BUT, he was also in a business serving wealthy folks, so these could have been a tip!? Years ago!?

I have seen prices on the Net ranging from $1000 to over $5000 for these identical coins...EACH!

Now my ??? Does anyone have first hand knowledge of or done business with a reputable coin grading firm that doesn't charge an arm/leg for their one-time service? If these turn out not to be genuine, I don't want to send good money after bad!

I'm kinda bumfuzzled & don't know exactly how to approach selling these without getting s*****d! Any/all suggestions considered...And thanx in advance!

Merry Christmas,
DR

Can you post pics or describe what is on both sides of the coin???
Most grading service are really not that expensive.I would use PCGS as it seems to be the prefered service.

Sorry to seem secretive about this earlier, but had some private issues to tend to.

They are 1788 Massachusetts Half Cents. I will try to get/post pictures tomorrow.

Check them carefully, there are lots of copies of Massachusetts coins out there. You can usually see a seam around the rim of the cheaper copies, and the surfaces look a little rough and grainy.

I took some pics today...Not thrilled with the results...Apparently my camera doesn't do well on close-ups. Will see if I can't get one on here that might be legible...

Try taking a bunch of pics at various distances through a magnifying glass..

Mystery Solved...They're both fake. Story has it that several years ago some big corporation had a zillion of these made for their sales force...Some type of new product introduction. Don't know if there's any truth to that or urban legend!?

Any way, thanks to those that responded & Merry Christmas to all!
