It's a wrought iron lever padlock— often called a "smokehouse lock" or "smokie"— made by Sargent & Co. of New Haven, CT. That's their logo on the drop (keyhole cover). Similar locks were made over a fairly long period of time, but it dates somewhere in the latter half of the 1800's. Sargent & Co. was founded in 1857.

Hey .. That's great! Thank you very much! I have a book called the PADLOCK COLLECTOR which pictures the lock, but simply IDs it as S & Co. and give no information whatsoever. Do you know of any comprehensive books dealing with old locks that might be better? Thanks again for your help.
