so I was detecting where there was a "pony express" a long time ago on my property, and if you don't know what the is, its pretty much how they used to transfer mail to other places. So i found most of my finds there. The other finds took place at a farmers field. I'm pretty new in metal detecting i have probably only been doing it for about 3 weeks, so the item might be a dead give away. :P but anyways here they are. The first two images are found in a farmers field, the first one seems to be led, and the other one seems to be copper with led in the middle. The rest are from the "pony express" Thanks :)

The 1st item is a LEAD BAG/CLOTH SEAL, which was used to bind bags of goods. Many were embossed with the city and/or product. They can date back to the 1600's. Good find! Breezie Here's a site:

SS, yes, it is a LEAD SEAL, and they were thick. I've found 10 or more, and they are that thickness. This particular one is a BALE SEAL They were single disc seals rather than 2 disc. The BALE SEALS were generally thicker since they were singles. These were used to identify textiles, as well as trade goods. The CLOTH SEALS were typically two disc seals joined by a connecting strip. These were intended to be folded around each side of a textile and stamped closed, in a manner similar to that in which coins were stamped.

Sorry Breezi....but I have found hundreds :P and none have looked like that, firstly there would be a rim, were the lead had been melted, there's no tag piece either...like I said some type of weight :) which also I have found hundreds of :)

Below are 2 pics of a SALT Bale Seal I found recently with no rim. It is embossed SAL for SAL Cape Verde Africa. The bales are singles, thus no tag, and note the thickness.

Sorry Breezie dear but I have to agree with SS on this. I don't think the lead piece looks like a seal
Welcome to Tnet M3t4L. Does it look like the might be iron inside the lead piece. It looks like it might be part of an old roofing nail. The heads had lead around them and the lead was to seal the nail hole. The second thing is a modern bullet. The iron band may have come off a wagon axle like has already been said but may have come from a wooden keg too. the iron piece at the very bottom looks like a piece of an iron kettle. The other pieces I have no idea.

Good idea, roofing nail head (water resistance measure). :icon_thumright:
