Found this small military button today and have done some research, guess I'm looking to find out if I'm any good at button research. The backmark appears to be D E V & Co. across the top with N.A. at the bottom. As you can see in the pic the loop is bent over the backmark and I didn't want to fool with it since it seems still well attached. Searching through several list I found a manufacturer, DEVLIN & CO. New York. This is a bit confusing since my button has an N.A. at the bottom. Can anyone enlighten me? Thanks in advance. Hunter

Pardon me if you already know most or all of the following info. Other readers might not.

Time-dating your Great Seal (of the United States) US Army button:
1- The inclusion of "N.A." (for North Attleboro, Massachusets) in its D.Evans & Co. backmark means post-1900.
2- "Great Seal" emblem adopted for use on US Army buttons in 1902, still in use today on them.
3- Having a raised rim around a Great Seal button's front means 1910-to-present.
4- "Black finish" on a Great Seal button means World War One era to 1923.

Mr. Bigcypress and Mr. Cannonball guy, Thank you both very much. I am continually amazed at the wealth of knowledge this forum brings out. The following excerpt from some of the research I found on this site explains why a military button would be found at a children's school.

In 1898 a new school was built on the east side of the road and faced north toward an old road that once crossed the field from XXXXXXXX. The school building was also used for church services, Sunday school, and for Grange meetings as well as other community activities.

Other community activities could have been the departing or the homecoming of a local military resident. The building is said to have been abandoned and torn down in the 1950' so the time frame and your dates seem to work as well. Thanks again, Hunter
