What's the story on this button? It is dime sized and is backmarked - TREBLE GILT. It has a 1 in a circle above a shield with 3 lions. Is it military or civilian and who made it? Any input would be appreciated. DD

now this is going to be a difficult one.

The quality mark & the 3 Lions of England point to a British Manufacture - but your very unlikely to ever track down the maker.

It has a kind of Military 'feel' to it but its not quite right, its closer to a Livery style button with that shield on it. This could include Civil company Livery types as well as personal.

The '1' above would normally point towards the 1st Reg of Foot:
1st (Royal) Regiment of Foot 1751–1812
1st Regiment of Foot (Royal Scots) 1812–1821
1st or The Royal Regiment of Foot 1821–1871
1st or The Royal Scots Regiment 1871–1881

However, looking at the construction & backmark of the button, it seems to indicate an early-mid 19th C date, but the 3 Lions of England would never have been a first choice of the Royal Scots :P

So, I'm guessing this may remain a mystery for some type, unless someone reconsizes it as US/Canadian :dontknow:

If I had to guess and start somewhere it would be a 1st regt./unit dating about turn of the century from the States of Jersey. But it could easily be something entirely different, and no doubt is... You never know until you know.
