I found this one today and have never seen one quite like. It has an Eagle and an Anchor with thirteen stars around the edge of the button. The back has "Treble Gilt" and the button is the same size as a dime. Take a look and let me know what you think.

Looks a little like this one.

United States Navy

1pc. cast brass, 20mm
BM: "Blank back"
Eagle, lined shield at side, anchor in shield, 13 five pointed stars encircling.

sirlostalot,

Thanks for the post. They do look an awful lot alike, but, i do see some differences. Not that it makes the time frame any different, but just noticing the differences. The first one that I saw was the direction of the rope on the anchor. Another is the location of the stars under the eagle. Finally, there appears to be some lines on the side of the eagle opposite from the anchor in my pic. I may be seeing things though.

Thanks a lot for your response cause I didn't have a clue.

Congrats! This is a great button that is displayed in the button book, "Record of American Uniform and Historical Buttons" by Alphaeus H. Albert. The book says the following:

Navy; 1 piece
With 13 five-pointed stars encircling. RV 35-50
Backmark "Treble Gilt". 22mm
(Photo 6C pg. 87)

This button is worth quite a bit actually with the listed RV value showing its rarity because the scale is based with 1 being a common button and the higher values being rarer. The photo in this book also has all of the specifics that you pointed out on your button. Great Find!

Nice button. Did you ever figure out how they got there in the first place? It'd be good to go down there and find another.

pitdiggers.......Thanks for the info. I'm gonna see if I can get me one of those books.

juanmoretime....Man I dont know about tying up with Doug's. His was pretty awesome.

Fonfixer...I still havent figured that part out. Had to have been a lot of folks in need of a seamstress in that camp. Damn shame they didnt have holes in their pockets too.

trikikiwi....I'm not too good on the story aspects of the hunt. Mine is more like "It was in the ground and I dug it up" :laughing7:

But thanks again guys......
