Re: Need PBK HELP on a button for a friend.

Could we see the reverse please? What does the shank look like? Are there any backmarks? I can't tell whether it is lead or pewter from the photo, but I'm suspecting pewter.

Colonial button! US Continentals!

<<0********X>>

"10" on the "Confidence-O-Reply Meter" on this one.

Yours is actually probably a militia button patterened after the 1777 (undated) "issue" button.

He found it in Connecicut, near a old foundation.......so i'm guessing it's real but don't know.

Personally speaking, I would be worried about the way it looks.

Its doesn't seem pewter to me & is in remarkable condition.

Gut feeling is a copy, but I've been wrong before.

Re: Need PBK HELP on a button for a friend.

This is a rare variant of the Continental Army "USA" monogram button.

Modern copies do exist— and I, too, have an uneasy feeling about its authenticity.

That said, if it's the real deal, it's worth $1,500-2,000+. In fact, I know someone who would definitely be interested in purchasing it. (Not me! I couldn't even scrape up a down payment on the replica! :D)

If possible, please post a photo of the back and I'll ask an expert on Rev. War buttons to check it out.

Not exactly the same button (back), but from the same era:

Another cast back of one from exact same period. :)

BTW your friend's button is in the book "Military Buttons of the American Revolution" by Don Troiani.

It looks like the AUSA.sa Enlisted man's pattern with cable border and relief, interwined and overlaid letters "USA" over the date "1777", the one in his book was found at Valley Forge. 20mm in size BTW.

Yes but look at how clean the mould mark is, and how good the edges are. I really hope it is real, so worth taking to an expert. Easier in the hand than on the net. Fingers crossed, don't get your hopes up & then your be more than pleased if it works out.

I hope I don't seem to be putting the find down, thats not my intention. I say what I see & am often wrong. Research, research & reasearch that the key. ;D

I just thought given the even wear on the button...That the casting mark should show some sort of wear...but it looks crisp enough to cut your finger on. I hope it is real...But even if it isn't it still makes a nice add to a collection.
