So I got a couple of these dimes halves and the two dollars from a deceased family member 15 years ago, threw them in a drawer....didn't care for them (was 10), then in time, since I was told they're special so I couldn't spend them...glad I listened ...got into metal detecting and looove finding silver, some are finds, ...anyways, I'd like to know if any trained eyes can spot something special of these, key dates, errors, etc.. I think the damage on 7 is post mint, but, I'm an idiot at numismatics ...I've only been collecting avidly since this year started.. ...I tried to get decent and thorough pics....ilk take more if need be.... ..can I get a value base too? I want to add a few things to my insurance policy.. like metal detector, some other finds... My wife and son.. ..yah, lots happened the past year.. but, anyways, here they are...ill split them up.. uploadfromtaptalk1370062642634.jpg disregard the 14 this is 7** missing aes in states.

The "W" mintmark is the designer's initials. It is an A-W imposed over each other. Adolph Weinman. The mintmark on the mercury dime is on the reverse. Yours doesn't have one so it was minted in Philadelphia.

This is known as a grease filled error in which grease built up in the letters preventing them from fully striking up. Its pretty common so no premium is associated with them, still very cool though.......

On the 1921 Morgan's is there a way to tell if its a high relief or weak strike?...in all the auctions I've looked at the 79$ ones look a lot like the 4000$ ones
Edit:hit submit before finished..
...Idk if the auction sites use a general msxx pic and use it for all auctions (doubtful, that seems a bit unethical)...but to me, on heritage, they had q 2$ bid on one that looked the same as the 3800, so I know its just my inexperience in examining them...

I think you may be confused, the high relief variety usually is associated with 1921 peace dollars........

Those are some beautiful coins! I would suggest dumping the 1971 half, which is just clad and has no silver.

Ahh, yes. I did get confused on that, peace n Morgan's... And there are SOME 1971 and 1977 that contain 40% silver! Just like there are SOME 65 dimes on silver planchets too... It does have the copper strip on the edge, but a couple ppl have said that they made the err of just checking the rim and then found out they still could be 40%... ...Idk, like I said, I'm a nooooob at this.... Been reading non stop since Jan, but there's just soooo much info to absorb.... I'll most likely be reading for the rest of my life and STILL learning til the day I die....and I'm only 25, so I got a lot left to live.. ...any good book suggestions?

Nothing rare, just basic silver. I'd keep them though (except the '71 half). You never know when our paper dollar will become worthless.

The Red Book is a good book to get for US coins. If it has a copper strip that is clear (definite red strip), it is clad. It could be 40% if it is more dark, but there are only a few 40% 1971 in existence.

I love Mercs! As said before, #21 is a 1936 and is the 6th most common Merc in terms of mintage with approximately 87.5 Million minted.
