this bayonet was found locally, back in 1974 and i made a $200.00 offer to purchase this baby. on a risk that it might not be worth that. but i love relics and now it is mine. so now i need help to find info on this piece of history and see if i did alright on my gamble. it has spent the last 30+ years buried in a closet. so here are all the angles... and the tip is double bladed. thanks for any help. all i know is The Seitengewehr 71 is scarce & when found for sale can be expensive, NHbenz thanks for the ID MR TUFF

Re: need id on bayonet civil war era!!!

'B' under crown = House of Liege Belgian proof mark (Belgian made weapons)

Possibly a Seitengewehr 71, a German bayonet used in the 1870's up through WWI.

Nice ID!

Nice ID!
Could be Belgian or Austrian. I think it was a cerimonial piece rather than a combat bayonet. Tony

Tony, could you expand on this? I'm always hoping to learn more.
Mr T., it would be great to figure out what the marking is in you're tenth photo. If it could be attributed to any certain division, etc. then the value could be escalated.

thanks for the help on the id NHbenz. now is this a commanding officer or a NCO bayonet? and how rare?

Re: need more info on pre ww1 german bayonet

Would a commanding officer even have a bayonet? I would think it more likely to be an enlisted man ceremonial bayonet from an honor guard or something similar.

I like bayonets. Yours is nice. Did they solve the ID for you?

Re: need more info on pre ww1 german bayonet

I'd have to go along with the ceremonial thing too. Most bayonets of that era have wooden grips instead of solid brass. That one looks designed to polish up and look sharp. I have several WWI and WWII bayonets but none match this one. Monty

Great looking bayonet :icon_king: I think you made a good deal :icon_thumright:

Maybe a metal detectorist lost it in the park back in 1974 :D
