I have an old set of 4 little cardboard cards in a box and would like to know what they would have been used for. They measure 2-1/2" square, each has one number from 1 to 4 and also a floral picture on a black background. All have a hole in one corner as if for hanging. I wonder if they would possibly have been used as advent cards to decorate a Christmas Tree? Any help will be appreciated, thanks.

Thanks for your reply
The back of each card is just plain cardboard, only the front is illustrated.
Seems to me I read it somewhere that advent cards were once used on Christmas Trees or an advent tree (countdown to Christmas) but can't find anything on it now.
I'm not sure it would be a game because of the little hole in the top left corner which would indicate to me that it was for hanging or as a gift card (but then why a number).
The box lid has a pasted on black covering designed with goldtone 'squiggles' (covers the whole top and part of the sides inside) but it is definitely not homemade.

----------
A couple of questions come to mind.. whats on the back of each?
and why would you think Advent cards?
Maybe a game?
Interesting.. is the box handmade (read homemade)?

Hello everybody!!!,Doe's the box fit the card's?...Meaning,Is there room for more? or do the cards FILL the box??
Advent calanders are for how many day's before christmas,12??? if the card's "fill the box"then i'd say NO to the advent theory, but then what? not coaster's! i'll look into my empherea books&holiday collectibles and see what i come up with...till then,HH Everyone!!!

More great questions, thanks...
The cards fit in the box loosely but it could not hold any more than one or two more so they're probably not advent cards unless they were sold in sets. (See new picture.) I would rule out coasters, as there would be no need of a hole in the corner.
Thanks for your help ~ maybe you can find a clue from your collection...

Thanks, Mackaydon. There are no markings on the box anywhere, inside or out, but on the bottom (underside) there's a paper scrape / tape removal mark where it's possible a sticker of some kind might have been removed which might have held a clue.
