Need Info on this Rock Please.

This rock registered quite nicely 64avg(DFX) 5" deep. The size of a Half Dollar. Rough like sandpaper on the dark portion. Smooth on the brown portion. Thanks for you help.

Where was it found? Possibly slag - any old foundries in the area?

Found on a vacant Farm in Oxford PA. Very heavy for its size.

Anytime Brother. You could always head down to the local college or USGS office to get a more positive i.d. but if it registered on your detector - I'm thinking slag. A quick question - have you tried putting a magnet to it? I'd be curious to know what it does. If you don't have a magnet - try a compass. Get your north reading away from the "rock" and then hold it up next to it and see if it differs...

Had to add this - any battle sites near Oxford (Rev. or CW) - could also be some melted down lead with "earth" stuck in it...

Brandywine Battlefield is about 12 miles due north. From where I was detecting. William Penn had some ties in that area as well.

Hunter - if the "curiosity bug" is getting to you, try the magnet/compass trick (iron) and/or see if you can scratch it (lead). I'm kinda curious myself now.

By the way, I'm no expert on rocks, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn last night. (stole that from Nick)

DD. I have no magnet nor a compass. Sorry. I am gonna get magnet and a compass now that you mention it. I scraped it on paper---- nothing. I scratched it and very fine grains were chipping off. I have one more "What is it?" post to put up. Perhaps you can figure out the other item I dug up.
