They are "United States Army Great Seal" buttons.

This style button has been used by the US Army since 1902, and is still in use today. It replaced the Eagle button like you see in my avatar.

The key to dating the buttons is by using the back marks...

City Button Works has been making buttons since 1907... I don't know if they ever stopped...

And the other I am checking on, I'm having trouble trying to read it :)

The second one I believe says "Steele & Johnson" then "Wat??bur? CT". Its hard to read.

Edit: I really think its "Waterbury CT" ... not sure.

Here is some info... your back mark should fit one of these...

STEELE & JOHNSON 1858-1875
STEELE & JOHNSON MFG CO. 1875-1920

I have a bunch of Waterbury info, but none with the mixed names of Waterbury AND Steele & Johnson... So, still a bit of a mystery for the moment, but no worries, the right dates are coming soon...

UPDATE: I have found CW era Eagle buttons made under this same back mark - so we can assume your button is very turn of the century... In my opinion... I DID find a reference to the company existing in 1911 (Steel & Johnson manufacturing company, Waterbury CT.) NOT with the Waterbury companies...

And by the way - Welcome to TreasureNet!

Both buttons are great finds! Congratulations :)

City Button Works was in New York from 1907 to 1923. It then moved to Newark. That makes it a WWI-era button.
