Need info on bottles

Hello lynn,

We have a Bottles & Glass department here at TNet. There are quite a number of very knowledgeable members that contribute there regularly.

Good photos, taken in natural light of the pieces, parts would further your cause.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by "rims," but after a bit of show & tell, I'm sure we can help you. Here's an excellent site to peruse in the mean time: Bottle Finishes

I don't have a photo and only saw the broken off top. The color and the neck size is close to this but the lip on this piece has 2 rings and the top ring is not flat, not perfectly smooth but rounded, the top ring looks to wrap over like a rope. The glass is black.

Hi Lynn... Obviously without seeing the object its difficult to say concretely what you have... But you mentioned a double ring with the top ring being somewhat rounded instead of flat and it looks like it was wrapped over like a rope.

The lip (or double lip) in this case is also called a "Finish" as it was typically the last part of the bottle making process... From what you describe, your bottle has what is called an Applied String Lip With a Rolled (rounded) Finish. The Applied String Lip can vary dramatically from maker to maker and time period to time period as these bottles were blown and not mold made and there were no two exactly alike. The string lip styles varied depending primarily on the type of closure that the bottle would have had... Some were sealed with merely a string and cork during earlier periods while others had pewter screw type caps or collar type closures (19th-20th centuries).

Bottles with these types of Applied B String Lips can range from the 17th up to about the late 19th century (typically pre-1870) so dating the bottle would be difficult without the rest of it. I'm no expert on bottles... Just my two cents worth... Hope it helps...

Best, Phips

Hello Lynn,

Absent photos, or a more cogent description, it is very difficult to point you in the right direction. You are providing precious little information.

It sounds as if you are speaking of some kind of string rim / flared ring, or perhaps a laid on ring. The photo you posted is of an English or European onion bottle.

It looks like a Cased Gin bottle neck... Most probably late 1800's.

Here's a few examples with necks/lips like your find... Hope that helps... Phips
