I found these two items yesterday in a place that dates back around 1860 or so in a field near the house also found a sharps bullet and a musket ball very close to these two items .

The tag is 1 1/4 wide and has to the left of the hole the letter M and then to the right of the hole the letter C below that numbers 1168 and then below that the letters COAT .

The hanger object measures 3 3/4 inch in length and it has a hook in the middle .It appears to be brass . And help in the ID is greatly appreciatted .

The horse tack item , I think that is about right on ,but not sure about the coat check tag it looks more like a miners tag to me .

Agreed...cloakroom tag.
If you're going to argue it's a miners tag then why put it on here in the first place? Keep it as a "miners tag"..but you'll be wrong.
I'll admit i first thought "miners tag"..until you mentioned "coat". Umm speaks for itself in my opinion mate?

Question then , what does the letters M.C stand for above the 1168 ? Which would make it M.C COAT . And does any one have a picture of a round coat tag that was brass with copper core ? If someone can tell me what the M.C stands for then it will be agreed coat tag . This item was found about 500 yards away from the house .I am not out to be wrong just need all the information .The round coat tags I have seen only had numbers up to ussually three digits and this is a 4 digit number and two initials above the number this is why I ask what does the M.C stand for ?

"Morocco club"

"Maracana club"

"Macarena club"

I'm guessing any number of clubs that had cloakrooms can begin with "M".

Didn't mean it to come across as an argument.Sorry if you got that impression.

There's any number of possibilities of how and why it got there.Maybe his wife or daughter worked in a cloakroom and brought it home by mistake then lost or threw it away.I have no idea and doubt anyone else will either unfortunately. The only thing i can suggest is a deep Historical search of the area in question and see if there were any clubs or mines with the initials "M.C. & COAT"

This probably adds nothing but I'm compelled to say :D when I first started reading this post and saw that the tag said "M C" I thought it was going to be a Roman numeral.

Since "MC" is the Roman numeral 1,100 the number on the tag of 1,168 is probably just a coincidence but it made me think about it in a new way for a while. Can't figure it out though.

Miners apparently got "credit" for every bag of ore they put into the minecars - COAT may be a miners name. see the text I excerpted from www.worthpoint.com:

Mining~COLE MINE~Miners Tag & Ore Tag~Token~Bisbee~Ariz

A BRASS MINERS TAG & PAPER ORE TAG~BOTH STAMPED "COLE"

For the Bisbee Arizona collectors... This is an original two piece set c1920s solid brass "THE COLE MINE MINERS UNDERGROUND MINE TAG & ORE SACK TAG" The Cole Mine was owned and operated by the "CALUMET & ARIZONA MINING COMPANY" and at the height of it's Bisbee operation they had seven shafts.. The Irish Mag~Oliver~Cole~Briggs~Hoatson and Junction. This brass tag was used at the Cole Mine to identify the miner when he was working underground. He would place this tag by his name on a large tally board before going underground and remove the tag when he came to the surface. The paper "COLE SMELTING ORE SACK TAG" was used to identify the number of skips (ore cars) or sacks. This excellent tag is about the size of a quarter and boldly stamped "COLE 19" Items related to this mine are very rare and sought after. is your chance to own a cool piece of early Bisbee Mining history. Look for my other early Bisbee Miners Tags and mining items running on ebay now.... Good Luck

Thanks Stegner

I checked out the link to worthpoint and the round ones look very very close to what I have ,I am still waiting for someone to show me a picture of a brass with copper core coat tag for comparison . I have been unable to locate a picture online ...myself .I am still leaning towards miners tag but I will wait for a coat tag picture ..
