Need ID on this strange rock formations found at river bank near Native American cave

I found this in Northern NJ at a river bank. I know there was a Native American cave nearby and limestone around. Someone had sugested it co u ld have been to start fire or crush acorns? The object is about 5 to 6 inches long and seems to have symmetrical holes on top. I have yet to be able to ID this and would love your help as this is not my area or expertise.. Merry Christmas all.

Looks like a natural formation to me though.

I agree, it looks like a naturally eroded rock. A cool one though.

I am far from a rock formations expert but the holes all seem to line up symmetrically and there seems to be finger nail like marks on side all in a row. Does this happen due to water wear etc? Just seems odd to me but like I said this is not my area of knowledge.

Well, we are not experts in rock formations either, but the grim reaper and I do know Indian artifacts, and I think you could take our opinions on this piece to the bank.

Nature has done some pretty amazing things to stones I've learned.

I agree some type of natural rock, perhaps a fossil eroded out?

If it's man-made, it could be a heavily eroded piece of brick or something like that.

Here's example of fossil that has a very geometric pattern, I've seen some that almost look like a piece of ultra-modern sculpture.



Here are some chunks of brick on the beach, the holes can erode in to different shapes when crushed building materials end up in a creek or on the beach. There are also lots of types of ceramic honey comb bricks that are that color and can have multi holes that don't go through the other side.

keep in mind too...an artifact like that would need to have a use...and would have other examples found over time of a similar type. every one of us here have been stumped or fooled by mother nature more than once.
