I've never seen a British Royal Navy button with a star and letter-initials. Also, ever since the early-1800s, Royal Navy buttons tend to have a crown above the anchor(s). So, in view of your button having a star and initials with two crossed anchors, I think it is a commercial Steam Ship company's uniform button.

I tried to find it at the Waterbury Button Company's website, in the Career Uniform buttons > Anchors section... but that section doesn't seem to be working today.

Also… in relic-ID requests, it's often helpful for the finder to tell us the country and state/province/county it was found in.

The Waterbury site is being reworked and has been hacked once which caused delays. The site was supposed to be up by May 1st but it is still not fully functioning.

Thanks for your answer!!! Button I found on the Coney Island beach Brooklyn NY!!! It is not Waterbury button, because one of the words on the back is Paris, and I think crown also is on the back!!! Thank you!!! Mummytrol!!!

Its not British Navy.

I think I see 3 script letters around the outside, 1 is an S. Which could be Ship or Steamship. I believe it is an old commercial or merchant ship, the letters will narrow it down.
