Has anyone ever seen or found a ring like this. I found it recently at the beach where I've been finding non ferrous shipwreck spikes and the brass medallion that I posted a couple of weeks ago, and was hoping that it could have come from the wreck. A friend thought it was Tibetan script and a buddhist saying and probably wasn't old but I haven't been able to match the script with any from India, asia, or anywhere else. I can email some higher resolution and clearer closeup pics if that would help. If you know of any good epigraphy or world script sites please reply. Thanks for the help.

Gary, a suggestion... roll the ring onto a flat strip of clay to get an impression, then check again. It may be a reverse image, meant to be used like a cylider seal.

Gary,
I would try to clean it (delicately) a little more and then try rolling it in the clay. Or you can try using a piece of onion paper (or just some thin paper of any sort) and use the old rubbing technique with a piece of chalk or crayon.

Just remember, the clay is going to reverse the image. The rubbing will bring it out just as it appears on the ring.

Thats an interesting find!

Good Luck,

Robert in SC

Thanks guys for the ideas. I'm gun shy about cleaning it at all till I find out more about it, but the clay and onion paper ideas are great. A lady from a university emailed and thought the ring was upside down and it was probably Devanagari or Ranjana script but she wasn't sure. This pic is turned around, (probably the correct way). Gary

This is a pretty common ring from Nepal/Tibet. It easy to find in Eastern style shops- if you see Tibetan prayer flas, I'm sure you'll find one of these, I had one back in college. It looks more than it is I think, I'll bet the farm that it's new.

how can you tell?

Tibetan Om Mani Padme Hum ring, very common, mantra of Chenrezig Buddha of Compassion, stylised Ranjana script.

The ring says Om Mani Padme Hum thats is a shloka in Sanskrit, it means "The great Jewel in the Lotus"
Its a mantra for nirvana where the jewel in the lotus signifies the attainment of nirvana.
Could be worth a lot because this shoka has been around for centuries, probably not worth much though.
