Need ID help with colonial button or seal found today

This small lead or pewter item appears to be a button, but with the markings it might be a seal. It contains 3 rows of lettering: GROS-MAR-MAH, or that's what it looks like. Any clue as to what this is or what the markings mean?

I was going to say French and early, maybe 1700's, but I think daroofa hit the nail on the head. Nice find and well done
